It\u2019s time for a rewrite<\/strong>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Knight\u2019s synthetic biology company Ginkgo Bioworks is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alexandrasternlicht\/2020\/03\/20\/synthetic-biology-powerhouse-ginkgo-bioworks-pledges-25-million-in-resources-to-projects-that-combat-coronavirus\/?sh=4213a7e3676f\">using its synthetic biology tech<\/a>\u00a0to develop COVID vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Gates has also poured millions into synthetic biology. As reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/scientists-push-boundaries-human-life-101723\">Newsweek in 2007<\/a>, \u201cUC Berkeley received $42 million from Bill Gates to create living microfactories\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geneticist Craig Venter is a pioneer in the field of synthetic biology.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/21\/science\/21cell.html?_r=0\">In 2010 the media hailed<\/a>\u00a0his team\u2019s success in creating \u201c<em>the first self-replicating species we\u2019ve had on the planet whose parent is a computer<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google founder Larry Page met with Craig Venter in California at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120415211954\/http:\/\/www.edge.org\/event\/seminars\/event\/places\/the-edge-billionaries-dinner-2010\">Edge billionaires meeting in 2010.<\/a>\u00a0Also present were representatives from the State department, Bill Gates, Anne Wojcicki, Bill Joy and dozens of other tech company CEO\u2019s and scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The Edge billionaire meetings have discussed the future of genetic engineering, biocomputation and re-designing humanity in a Transhumanist era. Physicist Freeman Dyson\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/3rd_culture\/age_of_wonder10\/age_of_wonder_index.html\">described the individuals leading this group<\/a>\u00a0as having god-like power to create entirely new species on earth in a \u201cNew Age of Wonder\u201d. He describes them as:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201c\u2026a new generation of artists, writing genomes as fluently as Blake and Byron wrote verses, might create an abundance of new flowers and fruit and trees and birds to enrich the ecology of our planet.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Patenting life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Synthetic engineering of plant and animal life has enabled corporations to patent and profit from genetic code.<\/p>\n<p>Because synthetic biology is a different technique than older genetic engineering tech<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/06\/13\/supreme-court-business-dna\/\">,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2013\/06\/13\/supreme-court-business-dna\/\">the supreme court ruled<\/a>\u00a0in 2013 that synthetic DNA can be patented because it is not a \u201cproduct of nature\u201d. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote,<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201c\u2026the lab technician unquestionably creates something new when cDNA is made. cDNA retains the naturally occurring exons of DNA, but it is distinct from the DNA from which it was derived. As a result, cDNA is not a \u201cproduct of nature\u201d and is patent eligible under \u00a7101, except insofar as very short series of DNA may have no intervening introns to remove when creating cDNA\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cFood 2.0\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Synthetic biology ingredients have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oldthinkernews.com\/2014\/03\/16\/new-form-of-gmo-sneaking-into-food-supply-this-year\/\">already quietly entered<\/a>\u00a0our food supply.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/synthetic-biology-firms-shift-focus-1.14602\">Nature reported in 2014<\/a>, \u201c<em>This year [Evolva] will release a product that has been created by genetically modified yeast that converts sugars to vanillin. It will be the first major synthetic-biology food additive to hit supermarkets<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, other synthetic foods have been developed. Synthetic biology has created plant based burgers, eggs, and shrimp.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/johncumbers\/2019\/07\/22\/impossible-ice-cream-anyone\/?sh=28671bb97b02\">Forbes reports<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cWith the advent of synthetic biology, the easy reading, writing and editing of DNA could open up a whole new world of designer proteins with enhanced nutrition, flavors, fragrances, and material properties.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Humans re-engineered with new vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/10\/health\/protection-without-a-vaccine.html?_r=2&amp;referer=http:\/\/www.uh.edu\/ethicsinscience\/Links\/General-Interest.php\">The New York Times reported<\/a>\u00a0on the developing vaccine technology called \u201cimmunoprophylaxis by gene transfer\u201d in 2015. As the Times reported, animal tests on the synthetic DNA vaccine \u201c<em>are\u00a0<\/em><em><strong>essentially re-engineering<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0the animals to resist disease<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times piece went on to say, \u201c\u2026<strong>the prospect of genetically engineering people to resist infectious diseases may raise concerns among patients<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, human beings are set to be genetically altered with mRNA vaccine technology based on synthetic biology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2020\/03\/09\/coronavirus-scientists-play-legos-with-proteins-to-build-next-gen-vaccine\/\">As reported, the Gates funded<\/a>\u00a0synthetic biologists believe that they can \u201cdo better\u201d than nature with \u201c<strong>self-assembling nanoparticles<\/strong>\u201d that will be injected into your body:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>With all due respect to nature, synthetic biologists believe they can do better.
