(AFP Photo\/Thomas Coex)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<div class=\"the-content\">\n<p>A planned visit to Israel by US Vice President Mike Pence was called off less than two weeks before he was due to arrive, the US Embassy confirmed Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>No reason was given for the cancellation, which was first reported by the Ynet news site.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-336x280_Middle_1\" class=\"banner 336x280_Middle_1 \"><\/div>\n<p>Pence was reportedly scheduled to make a number of stops on a final world trip before leaving office on January 20. Earlier this month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/12\/17\/pence-trump-election-loss-447326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politico reported<\/a>\u00a0that the vice president planned to take off on January 6 \u2014 the same day the US Congress is scheduled to confirm President-elect Joe Biden\u2019s electoral victory \u2014 visiting a number of countries, including Israel from January 10 to 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-promo\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/signup\/?utm_source=toi-articles&amp;utm_medium=middle-link&amp;utm_campaign=signup-buttons\">Get The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/signup\/?utm_source=toi-articles&amp;utm_medium=middle-link&amp;utm_campaign=signup-buttons\">FREE SIGN UP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though his stop in Israel was never officially confirmed by the US Embassy, the Israel Police and other Israeli authorities had begun preparations for the visit.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Regional Cooperation Minister Ofir Akunis, a member of Netanyahu\u2019s Likud party, confirmed the visit, saying, \u201cPence is planning on visiting Israel. I don\u2019t want to commit to the dates. (AFP Photo\/Pool\/Ronen Zvulun)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In its report, Politico said the trip abroad appeared to be an effort by Pence to avoid the ire of US President Donald Trump and his supporters over the vice president\u2019s expected validation of the 2020 election results in his capacity as president of the US Senate.
