The American people deserve accountability, but they cannot get it from non-elected public officials, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio wrote in a Fox News<\/a> opinion piece in a swipe at what he called the \u201carrogance\u201d of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci.<\/p>\n

\u201cPassing the buck to unelected technocrats avoids accountability and means falling back on two fallacies: first, that science gives us a straightforward playbook for answering questions facing decision-makers; and, second, that those technocrats are the only legitimate interpreters of the facts,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n

The Florida Republican was upset at Fauci for admitting in a recent interview that he downplayed the percent of the population needing a coronavirus vaccination to obtain herd immunity, because he felt the country wasn\u2019t ready to hear it.<\/p>\n

Rubio said he was sure that Fauci \u201cmade the decision to mislead with nothing but good intentions. However, let\u2019s be clear about what he was doing: lying to the American people in order to manipulate their behavior,\u201d adding he \u201cwas appalled by his arrogance\u201d and that the public must not be afraid to call out when unelected public officials are \u201ccaught overstepping their legitimate authority.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that \u201cWhen elected representatives make decisions, they can be held responsible by the public. But when public health officials with decades of experience and leadership within our nation\u2019s institutions short-circuit the political process and make these decisions themselves, they deny the American people that same opportunity – and to change course if desired.\u201d<\/p>\n
