Vice President Mike Pence\u2019s chief of staff, Marc Short, said he was denied entry Wednesday night back into the White House after Pence announced he would follow his constitutional duty to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election, according to Real Clear Politics reporter Philip Wegmann.<\/p>\n

Short reportedly\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0Wegmann that he is not allowed back on White House grounds because \u201cHe\u2019s (Trump\u2019s) blaming me for advice to VP.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump\u00a0has claimed<\/a>\u00a0several times that Pence can\u00a0\u201creject\u201d states\u2019 chosen electors while he presides over the Senate for the certification process, but Pence said he would not object.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0president\u2019s repeated claims<\/a>\u00a0that Pence can overturn the results are false.<\/p>\n

The vice president does not have the power to object to any of the state electors\u2019 votes. Congress alone was granted the ability to contest results by the\u00a0Electoral Count Act of 1887<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMike Pence didn\u2019t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. Pro-Trump rioters\u00a0stormed<\/a> the Capitol building Wednesday, causing damage and postponing the certification process as members of Congress evacuated the building.<\/p>\n

Pence announced Wednesday in a letter to Congress that he would not attempt to overturn the results of the presidential election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not,\u201d Pence\u00a0wrote<\/a>. \u201cI want to assure the American people that I will keep the oath I made to them and I will keep the oath I made to Almighty God.\u201d<\/p>\n
