We are committed to working collectively with the technology and medical communities, as well as global governments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ken Mayer, founder and CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/safehealth.me\/\">Safe Health<\/a>\u00a0also stated that the VCI \u201cwill enable\u00a0application developers to create privacy-preserving health status\u00a0verification\u00a0solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into existing\u00a0ticketing workflows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Put more simply, it will \u201chelp get concerts\u00a0and sporting events going\u00a0again,\u201d Mayer said.<\/p>\n<p>The context seems clear. Those without the COVID passport will not be allowed to travel or engage in social events.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uktech.news\/news\/covid-19-verified-passport-worlds-first-by-a-british-tech-firm-20201207\">Tech companies<\/a>\u00a0are scrambling over themselves to develop\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelweekly.com.au\/article\/locally-developed-digital-health-passport-could-unlock-australias-international-border-gates\/\">COVID passport systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/11\/24\/global-transport-body-developing-travel-pass-app-to-link-proof-of-vaccination-to-passports\/\">reported last month<\/a>, the IATA, the world\u2019s largest air transport lobby group, expects its COVID travel pass app\u00a0to be fully rolled out in the first months of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>A further \u2018COVID passport\u2019 app\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aokpass.com\/\">called the\u00a0AOKpass<\/a>\u00a0from travel security firm International SOS is currently\u00a0undergoing trials \u00a0between Abu Dhabi and Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d-FTnutOBwI\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>We have exhaustively documented the privacy and rights concerns associated with the move toward adoption, and more importantly the global standardisation of so called COVID passports.<\/p>\n<p>UK based human rights group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infowars.com\/posts\/covid-vaccine-certificates-could-lead-to-global-identity-document-used-for-all-aspects-of-life-human-rights-ngo-warns\/\">Privacy International has warned<\/a>\u00a0that if\u00a0<em>\u201cimmunity\u201d<\/em>\u00a0passports are issued by some governments, it could signal a creep toward\u00a0<em>\u201cdigital identity schemes\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and other mandatory ID schemes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you have multiple uses (e.g. access to services) in multiple domains (i.e. public sector, private sector), in multiple countries (i.e. travel), then we are approaching a global identity document needed to live your life,\u201d the group warned.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden based human rights group The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) warned recently that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/16\/great-reset-61-of-nations-have-decimated-liberty-with-covid-restrictions\/\">61 per cent of countries have used COVID restrictions<\/a>\u00a0\u201cthat were concerning from a democracy and human rights perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna Beduschi, an academic from Exeter University,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/coronavirus-covid-vaccine-passports-pose-risk-to-privacy-experts-warn\/\">commented<\/a>\u00a0on the potential\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2021\/01\/13\/eu-leaders-demand-standardised-vaccine-passport-for-travel\/\">move toward vaccine passports by EU<\/a>, noting that it \u201cposes essential questions for the protection of data privacy and human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beduschi added that the vaccine passports may \u201ccreate a new distinction between individuals based on their health status, which can then be used to determine the degree of freedoms and rights they may enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s own data protection chief Wojciech Wiewi\u00f3rowski recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edps.europa.eu\/sites\/edp\/files\/publication\/20-04-27_edps_qa_fr_senate_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">labeled the idea of an immunity passport \u201cextreme\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and has repeatedly said it is alarming, and \u2018disgusting\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/digital-immunity-passport-is-the-lesser-of-two-evils-argues-uk-start-up-founder\/\">A report\u00a0<\/a>compiled last year by AI research body the Ada Lovelace Institute said so called \u2018immunity\u2019 passports \u201cpose extremely high risks in terms of social cohesion, discrimination, exclusion and vulnerability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam Grant, campaign manager at the civili liberties advocacy group\u00a0<em>Liberty\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.libertyhumanrights.org.uk\/issue\/liberty-immunity-passports-pave-way-for-national-id-system\/\">has warned<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cany form of immunity passport risks creating a two-tier system in which some of us have access to freedoms and support while others are shut out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese systems could result in people who don\u2019t have immunity potentially being blocked from essential public services, work or housing \u2013 with the most marginalised among us hardest hit,\u201d Grant further warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has wider implications too because any form of immunity passport could pave the way for a full ID system \u2013 an idea which has repeatedly been rejected as incompatible with building a rights-respecting society,\u201d Grant further urged.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria Guevara, CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), has also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2021\/01\/13\/travel-news-quarantine-covid-vaccine-passports-summer-holidays\/\">slammed the passports as \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d<\/a>, saying \u201cWe should never require the vaccination to get a job or to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a Reuters event, the head of the WTTC also condemned airline Qantas for their previous assertion that unvaccinated people would not be allowed on their aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will take a significant amount of time to vaccinate the global population, particularly those in less advanced countries, or in different age groups, therefore we should not discriminate against those who wish to travel but have not been vaccinated,\u201d Guevara noted.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the spectre of so called \u2018immunity passports\u2019 is looming globally.<\/p>\n<p>As noted above, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.schengenvisainfo.com\/news\/greece-urges-eu-to-create-vaccination-certificate-to-facilitate-travel\/\">penned a letter<\/a>\u00a0to EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, demanding that the Commission should \u2018standardise\u2019 a vaccine passport across all member countries, and that it should be required for people to travel throughout the area, further outlining that\u00a0\u201cPersons who have been vaccinated should be free to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The request is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9149537\/Covid-EU-leaders-discuss-plans-week-roll-vaccine-passports.html\">set to be debated<\/a>\u00a0in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccine passports have previously been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.schengenvisainfo.com\/news\/covid-19-test-results-and-later-on-vaccination-will-be-required-for-schengen-visa-application\/\">touted by the EU<\/a>, with officials suggesting back in April that visa applicants would also be required to be vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>EU countries including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/spain-coronavirus-vaccine-refusal-registry-with-eu-countries\/\">Spain<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.err.ee\/1143517\/estonia-and-world-health-organization-digitally-sign-cooperation-agreement\">Estonia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.landlaeknir.is\/um-embaettid\/greinar\/grein\/item43709\/Certificates-regarding-previous-COVID-19-infection-that-are-accepted-at-the-border-in-Iceland-from-10-December-2020\">Iceland<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/health\/sites\/health\/files\/preparedness_response\/docs\/ev_20201207_sr_en.pdf\">Belgium<\/a>\u00a0have all indicated that they are open to some form of vaccine passports, as well as sharing the data across borders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2021\/01\/11\/denmark-introducing-covid-vaccine-passport\/\">Denmark\u00a0<\/a>recently announced that it is rolling out a \u2018Covid passport\u2019, to allow those who have taken the vaccine to engage in society without any restrictions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2021\/01\/14\/poland-rolls-out-vaccine-passports\/\">Poland has also announced plans<\/a>\u00a0to introduce vaccine passports, which will allow those who have taken the COVID shot greater freedoms than those who have not.<\/p>\n<p>Having left the EU, Britain would not be part of any standardised European scheme, however it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2021\/01\/12\/confirmed-britain-will-issue-vaccine-passports\/\">has now confirmed<\/a>\u00a0that it is rolling out vaccine passports, despite previous denials that it would do so.<\/p>\n<p>Recently,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/09\/canadian-health-ministry-exploring-immunity-passports-vaccine-tracking-and-surveillance\/\">the government in Ontario, Canada admitted<\/a>\u00a0that it is exploring \u2018immunity passports\u2019 in conjunction with restrictions on travel and access to social venues for the unvaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Last month,<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/14\/vaccinated-israelis-to-get-green-passport-allowing-them-to-attend-events-eat-at-restaurants\/\">\u00a0Israel announced<\/a>\u00a0that citizens who get the COVID-19 vaccine will be given \u2018green passports\u2019 that will enable them to attend venues and eat at restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/03\/americans-to-get-vaccination-card-to-prove-theyve-taken-the-covid-shot\/\">litany<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/09\/canadian-health-ministry-exploring-immunity-passports-vaccine-tracking-and-surveillance\/\">other<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/11\/30\/vaccine-minister-says-bars-restaurants-cinemas-will-demand-proof-of-vaccination-before-entry\/\">government\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/07\/another-airline-announces-that-covid-passports-will-be-essential-for-travel\/\">travel industry figures<\/a>\u00a0in both the US, Britain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/09\/video-another-travel-company-exec-says-vaccine-passports-are-coming\/\">and beyond<\/a>\u00a0have suggested that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/24\/airline-officially-launches-covid-passport-ahead-of-global-deployment\/\">\u2018COVID passports\u2019<\/a>\u00a0are coming in order for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/covid-19-vaccine-passports-could-help-life-return-to-normal-but-experts-urge-caution-11607425135\">\u2018life to get back to normal\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2020\/12\/14\/hotels-consider-requiring-all-guests-to-have-covid-vaccination\/\">hotels have also<\/a>\u00a0indicated they will do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Insurers have also indicated that they will fall in line with any standardisation of vaccination passports, and may demand to see proof of vaccination before covering those wishing to go on holiday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itij.com\/latest\/news\/travel-insurers-could-make-covid-19-vaccines-mandatory\">The international Travel and Health Insurance Journal reported<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cIf the EU obliges travellers to vaccinate, travel insurance providers may refuse to cover those who decline to have the vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EU news
