\u201cWhat we need right now is Sen. McConnell to unequivocally say the second\u00a0impeachment<\/a>\u00a0of Donald Trump after he leaves office is not only unconstitutional, it is bad for the country,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Graham, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said during a virtual appearance on Fox News\u2019 \u201cHannity.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cStand up and fight back,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n McConnell\u2019s office didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n The House of Representatives impeached Trump last week over alleged incitement of insurrection. Democrats and some Republicans claim Trump incited the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol during his speech that day on The Ellipse. Trump has called his remarks \u201ctotally appropriate<\/a>\u201d and\u00a0a timeline showed<\/a>\u00a0violence at the Capitol started before Trump finished speaking.<\/p>\n Graham is a leading voice in the Republican wing condemning the new impeachment. He said Tuesday that\u00a0America \u201cneeds to heal,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>adding, \u201cA second impeachment of Donald Trump after he leaves office won\u2019t heal the country, it will further divide the country.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAs to the Republican Party, if we throw in the towel, or are perceived to having thrown in the towel, and not fighting against this impeachment, the Republican Party, as Rand Paul said, will \u2018crack up,’\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) walks on Capitol Hill in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) last week said Republican senators backing a conviction of Trump would destroy the Republican Party.<\/p>\n \u201cIf Republicans go along with it, it will destroy the party,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Paul said<\/a>. \u201cA third of the Republicans will leave the party.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n A conviction requires a supermajority; the Senate will soon be 50 Republicans and 50 Democrats. The Senate voted last year to acquit Trump on the first impeachment charges.<\/p>\n McConnell has said the Senate will hold an impeachment trial and that he may vote to convict Trump.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate,\u201d McConnell wrote last week in a letter to colleagues, part of which was made public by the senator\u2019s office.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The Republican didn\u2019t agree to pressure from Democrats to start the trial on Jan. 13,\u00a0saying<\/a>\u00a0a \u201cfair or serious trial\u201d couldn\u2019t conclude before Trump leaves office on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n The trial can\u2019t start regardless until the House transmits the article of impeachment.
