Rep. Waters Claims She Didn’t Encourage Violence As Trump Lawyer Plans To Show Video<\/h1>\n

Rep.\u00a0Maxine Waters<\/a>\u00a0(D-Calif.) on Sunday\u00a0claimed she did not encourage people to commit violence when she said three years ago that people were going to \u201cabsolutely harass\u201d members of the Trump administration.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a matter of fact, if you look at the words that I used, the strongest thing I said was tell them they\u2019re not welcome, talk to them, tell them they\u2019re not welcome,\u201d Waters said on MSNBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t say go and fight. I didn\u2019t say anybody was going to have any violence. And so they can\u2019t make that stick.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Waters in separate remarks in 2018 encouraged people to confront government officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAlready you have members of your Cabinet that are being booed out of restaurants, who have protesters taking up at their house, who say, \u2018No peace, no sleep. No peace, no sleep,\u2019\u201d Waters told a crowd in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up, and if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd.\u00a0And you push back on them. Tell them they\u2019re not welcome anymore, anywhere!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Appearing on MSNBC after the rally, she added that she had \u201cno sympathy\u201d for people working for then-President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people are going to turn on them. They\u2019re going to protest. They\u2019re going to absolutely harass them until they decide that they\u2019re going to tell the president, \u2018No I can\u2019t hang with you,’\u201d she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Trump\u00a0at the time<\/a>\u00a0said Waters \u201cjust called for harm to supporters\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and Republicans have pointed to Waters\u2019s comments when defending Trump against the current\u00a0impeachment<\/a>\u00a0effort. The former president was impeached last month for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n

Bruce Castor, one of Trump\u2019s impeachment lawyers, was asked whether he\u2019d show senators during the upcoming trial the comments made by Waters and other Democrat officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI think you can count on that,\u201d Castor\u00a0said last week<\/a>. \u201cIf my eyes look a little red to the viewers, it\u2019s because I\u2019ve been looking at a lot of video.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of them in Washington are using really the most inflammatory rhetoric possible to use. And certainly there would be no suggestion that they did anything to incite any of the actions,\u201d he added, referring to the raucous riots that took place in major U.S. cities last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut here, when you have the president of the United States give a speech and says that you should peacefully make your thinking known to the people in Congress, he\u2019s all of a sudden a villain. You better be careful what you wish for.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Waters responded that the tactic wouldn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter what he says about me or [Speaker] Nancy Pelosi or [Sen.] Cory Booker, or anybody they\u2019re going to point to, it won\u2019t work,\u201d she said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt won\u2019t work at all, because nothing matches the way this president has tried to destroy this democracy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
