instead of &#8220;breastfeeding,&#8221; just years after U.S. academics published a study in which they argued that the promotion of breastfeeding as the &#8220;natural&#8221; way to feed a child has many negative societal effects.<\/p>\n<p>In early 2021, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals in the United Kingdom drew international criticism for\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BSUH_maternity\/status\/1358709099727360000\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BSUH_maternity\/status\/1358709099727360000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swapping<\/a>\u00a0the word &#8220;breastfeeding&#8221; for &#8220;chestfeeding&#8221; in an attempt to be more inclusive of transgender individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Harvard Medical School referred to women as &#8220;birthing people&#8221; in an effort to &#8220;include those who identify as non-binary or transgender,&#8221; as\u00a0<em>Campus Reform<\/em>\u00a0previously\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16477\" href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are concerned about breastfeeding promotion that praises breastfeeding as the &#8216;natural&#8217; way to feed infants,&#8221; wrote\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/hss.sas.upenn.edu\/people\/jessica-martucci\" href=\"https:\/\/hss.sas.upenn.edu\/people\/jessica-martucci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jessica Martucci<\/a>\u00a0of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/bioethics.jhu.edu\/people\/profile\/anne-barnhill\/\" href=\"https:\/\/bioethics.jhu.edu\/people\/profile\/anne-barnhill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne Barnhill<\/a>\u00a0of Johns Hopkins University in the journal\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/early\/2016\/03\/02\/peds.2015-4154?sso=1&amp;sso_redirect_count=1&amp;nfstatus=401&amp;nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&amp;nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3a+No+local+token\" href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/early\/2016\/03\/02\/peds.2015-4154?sso=1&amp;sso_redirect_count=1&amp;nfstatus=401&amp;nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&amp;nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3a+No+local+token\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pediatrics<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Promoting breastfeeding as &#8216;natural&#8217; may be ethically problematic, and, even more troublingly, it may bolster this belief that &#8216;natural&#8217; approaches are presumptively healthier.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"StoryComment\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Comment:<\/strong>\u00a0It&#8217;s hardly a &#8216;belief&#8217; that\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.sott.net\/article\/392070-US-campaigns-against-breastfeeding-to-protect-infant-formula-manufacturers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sott.net\/article\/392070-US-campaigns-against-breastfeeding-to-protect-infant-formula-manufacturers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">natural approaches<\/a> are healthier:<\/h3>\n<p>Martucci and Barnhill explained that in the 1950s and 1960s, a movement of women sought to promote breastfeeding in the wake of advances in medical formula technology \u2014 an approach that the researchers find &#8220;ethically problematic&#8221; because it may &#8220;support biologically deterministic arguments about the roles of men and women in the family&#8221; \u2014 for example, &#8220;that women should be the primary caretakers of children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Referencing the &#8216;natural&#8217; in breastfeeding promotion, then, may inadvertently endorse a controversial set of values about family life and gender roles, which would be ethically inappropriate,&#8221; they state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"StoryComment\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Comment:<\/strong>\u00a0Yes, like\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.sott.net\/article\/437109-Now-CHESS-is-being-called-RACIST-because-white-always-goes-first-Stop-this-insane-leftist-fantasy-world-I-want-to-get-off\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sott.net\/article\/437109-Now-CHESS-is-being-called-RACIST-because-white-always-goes-first-Stop-this-insane-leftist-fantasy-world-I-want-to-get-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">everything else<\/a>\u00a0that&#8217;s &#8216;racist&#8217; today.<\/h3>\n<p>The researchers were also concerned that such rhetoric <strong>&#8220;may ultimately challenge public health&#8217;s aims in other contexts, particularly childhood vaccination.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As recently as 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/129\/3\/e827\" href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/129\/3\/e827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reaffirmed<\/a>\u00a0its stance that &#8220;breastfeeding and human milk are the normative standards for infant feeding and nutrition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the documented short- and long-term medical and neurodevelopmental advantages of breastfeeding, infant nutrition should be considered a public health issue and not only a lifestyle choice,&#8221;
