{"id":55844,"date":"2021-03-13T18:27:48","date_gmt":"2021-03-13T22:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=55844"},"modified":"2021-03-13T18:27:48","modified_gmt":"2021-03-13T22:27:48","slug":"16-countries-are-pushing-united-nations-to-condemn-us-unilateral-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=55844","title":{"rendered":"16 Countries Are Pushing United Nations To Condemn US Unilateral Sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->by Dave DeCamp<br \/>\nAntiWar.com,<\/p>\n<p>China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and other countries subject to US sanctions\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-usa-un\/china-iran-north-korea-seek-support-at-u-n-to-push-back-against-unilateral-force-sanctions-idUSKBN2B335J\">are seeking support at the UN\u00a0<\/a>to push back against unilateral sanctions and the threat of force.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The effort by sixteen countries and the Palestinians argues that unilateral measures are against the UN Charter.\u00a0<\/strong>A letter from the group seen by\u00a0<em>Reuters<\/em>\u00a0says multilateralism &#8220;is currently under an unprecedented attack, which, in turn, threatens global peace and security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/unfile.jpg?itok=gbVm040S\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f86653c8-6172-4448-90f6-96bfaf4a3bea\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><figcaption><em>AFP via Getty Images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The other members of the group are Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, Algeria, Angola, Belarus, Bolivia, Eritrea, Laos, Nicaragua, Cambodia, Saint Vincent, and the Grenadines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The world is seeing a\u00a0<strong>growing resort to unilateralism, marked by isolationist and arbitrary actions, including the imposition of unilateral coercive measures<\/strong>\u00a0or the withdrawal from landmark agreements and multilateral institutions,&#8221;\u00a0the note from the group reads.<\/p>\n<p>But as Reuters notes there was immediately pushback and condemnation of the move, primarily from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-usa-un\/china-iran-north-korea-seek-support-at-u-n-to-push-back-against-unilateral-force-sanctions-idUSKBN2B335J\">Western allied countries<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>However, a senior European diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, responded: &#8220;These so-called friends are the ones who have done most to breach the charter.\u00a0<strong>Maybe they should start by respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms in their own countries<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Trump administration slapped crippling sanctions on Iran, Venezuela, and Syria that amount to economic embargoes, and those sanctions are still in place.<\/p>\n<p>The only ones President Biden has hinted at lifting are on Iran, but so far, the Biden administration has not made a sincere effort to revive the nuclear deal.
