Traister details the connections between his reported behavior and broader allegations of administration impropriety \u2014 including an alleged\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2021\/03\/cuomo-aides-altered-nursing-home-deaths-in-june-report.html\">cover-up<\/a> of nursing-home deaths during the pandemic. As one former staffer told her, \u201cThe same attitude that emboldens you to target a 25-year-old also emboldens you to scrub a nursing-home report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ckm5ujh3h00103h6fnxxc1jvn@published\" data-word-count=\"131\">Another former staffer, Kaitlin, who asked that her last name not be published, described meeting the governor while working at a fundraiser in 2016. When they were introduced, she says Cuomo grabbed her \u201cin a kind of dance pose\u201d as a photographer took a picture. She recalled thinking, \u201c<em>This is the weirdest interaction I\u2019ve ever had in my life<\/em>. I was like,\u00a0<em>Don\u2019t touch me.\u00a0<\/em>Everybody was watching.\u201d The same week, she received a voice-mail from Cuomo\u2019s office requesting that she interview for a job, though she never gave his office her contact information. \u201cWe all knew that this was only because of what I looked like,\u201d Kaitlin told\u00a0<em>New York<\/em>. \u201cWhy else would you ask someone to come in two days after you had a two-minute interaction at a party?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ckm5ujh9u00113h6fewe9r2wv@published\" data-word-count=\"167\">Kaitlin says she was frequently pressured to dress expensively during her time in the Cuomo administration. \u201cI did what I could with my clothes,\u201d she said, \u201cand it wasn\u2019t good enough for them.\u201d On some mornings when Cuomo started his day early, he would ask her if she \u201c\u2018decided not to get ready today?\u2019\u201d It was clear to Kaitlin what he was doing. \u201cI\u2019d think,\u00a0<em>You\u2019re such an asshole; you know you left early so I didn\u2019t have time.<\/em>\u201d Her experience was not an outlier: Other women who worked in Cuomo\u2019s office told\u00a0<em>New York<\/em>\u00a0that female aides were consistently told to dress up, and some were explicitly told by senior staff that they had to wear high heels whenever the governor was around (although Cuomo\u2019s office denies this). Cuomo\u2019s recruitment process also was not isolated: Kaitlin remembered that early in her tenure, he asked aides at a staff meeting to find a young woman he\u2019d met at a party the previous night for a potential job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ckm6h510t000p3h6g26pymobk@published\" data-word-count=\"60\">In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/andrew-cuomo-sexual-harassment-albany-reporter.html\">separate article<\/a>, journalist Jessica Bakeman, who covered the New York statehouse, describes experiencing a pattern of touching and remarks by Cuomo that she believes was intended to make her uncomfortable. \u201cIt\u2019s not that Cuomo spares men in his orbit from his trademark bullying and demeaning behavior,\u201d Bakeman writes. \u201cBut the way he bullies and demeans women is different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ckm5ujhbm00123h6f77ab5bs6@published\" data-word-count=\"124\">Traister also spoke with State Senator Alessandra Biaggi, an attorney and former Cuomo administration staffer who recalls being grabbed by the elbow at a party at the governor\u2019s mansion weeks after joining his office in 2016. \u201cHe didn\u2019t say \u2018Welcome\u2019 or \u2018Thank you for being here,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cHe said \u2018Nice dance moves\u2019 and walked away.\u201d\u00a0After she left her job to run for State Senate, she didn\u2019t see Cuomo until August 2018. At a wedding that year, Cuomo came up to her, said hello, and pulled her in and kissed her on her head. \u201c\u2018Are you jealous?\u2019\u201d she recalls him asking her fianc\u00e9, adding that \u201cI didn\u2019t feel sexually harassed. I felt like he was trying to make me feel uncomfortable, to disarm me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ckm5ujhfj00143h6fejhyob3p@published\" data-word-count=\"137\">Several former aides describe experiences of sexism and racism. Ana Liss, who previously told the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0of belittling encounters with Cuomo, told\u00a0<em>New York<\/em>\u00a0that on one of her first days in the administration, the governor asked her, \u201cDo you have a boyfriend?\u201d He later came up with \u201cflirtatious\u201d nicknames for her. Camonghne Felix, the first Black woman to work as a speechwriter for Cuomo, eventually moved to the press team when she accepted he was never going to use her speeches. \u201cIt\u2019s a very subtle form of racialized abuse,\u201d she said. \u201cYou know I am beneficial to you. I fill a quota. It looks good on paper, and we made sure to put press releases out. But you don\u2019t intend to incorporate me into the government. You just like to show me to people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ckm5ujhh500153h6fvuez7tm5@published\" data-word-count=\"80\">Multiple staffers told\u00a0<em>New York<\/em>\u00a0that they began therapy and antidepressants for the first time while working for Cuomo. But the results never justified the abuse. \u201cIt was policy-making like paint-by-\u00adnumbers,\u201d one former staffer said. \u201cThe goal was superficial, as opposed to changing people\u2019s lives.\u201d The former aide said that policy was often secondary to the appearance of progress. \u201cSomeone from the inner circle would call and say, \u2018The governor wants to go to Orange County.
