But on Friday night, following<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/iceland-volcano-risk-earthquakes-20000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">\u00a0weeks of earthquakes in the area<\/a><\/span>, the volcano came to life.<\/p>\n<p>The eruption is the first that the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the volcano is located, has experienced in 781 years.<\/p>\n<p>Video of the eruption show the bright lava oozing out of the earth, lighting up an otherwise stark dark night. The glow from the lava could be seen up to 20 miles away from Reykjav\u00edk, Iceland&#8217;s capital, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iceland-volcanic-eruptions-europe-b8179a1fe94dd3482761cfbd7a305e11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0and photos of the glow.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-twitter-tweet embed--float-none embed--size-medium lazyloaded\" data-require=\"third-party\/twitter-widgets\">\n<div class=\"embed__content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=true&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1373051709556146179&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbsnews.com%2Fnews%2Ficeland-volcano-fagradals-mountain-eruption-dormant-for-6000-years%2F&amp;siteScreenName=CBSNews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=e1ffbdb%3A1614796141937&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1373051709556146179\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Icelandic Police tweeted on Friday that people were to stay indoors and keep their windows closed to prevent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/almannavarnir\/status\/1373062258276896770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gas pollution<\/a>. When volcanoes erupt, the lava spews several potentially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/natural-disasters\/volcanoes#:~:text=Volcanic%20gases%20that%20pose%20the,a%20volcano%20that%20erupts%20violently.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hazardous gases<\/a>, including sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen fluoride, according to the United State Environmental Protection Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The Icelandic Meteorological Office said on Saturday morning that the pollution from this eruption, however, &#8220;is not expected to cause much discomfort for people except close up to the source of the eruption.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On its website, the office said &#8220;no volcanic ash is detected but high level of volcanic gases has been measured close to the eruption site.&#8221; Scientists and officials are monitoring the emissions closely.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-twitter-tweet embed--float-none embed--size-medium lazyloaded\" data-require=\"third-party\/twitter-widgets\">\n<div class=\"embed__content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=true&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-1&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1373058512553656321&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbsnews.com%2Fnews%2Ficeland-volcano-fagradals-mountain-eruption-dormant-for-6000-years%2F&amp;siteScreenName=CBSNews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=e1ffbdb%3A1614796141937&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1373058512553656321\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>By Saturday morning, the Icelandic Meteorological Office reported that volcanic activity had &#8220;somewhat decreased&#8221; since Friday evening. Scientists at the department have not cited major concern for people in the area, as the lava area is less than 1 square kilometer. Dozens of them had a magnitude of 3 or higher, meaning they could be felt. On Thursday, just one day before the eruption, the IMO reported that there had been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Vedurstofan\/status\/1372498364303020033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">400 earthquakes\u00a0<\/a>in a span of about seven hours.
