New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio has stunned Americans by suggesting cops should confront people at their homes if they have been accused of \u201churtful\u201d but non-criminal acts. Many are asking exactly how that would work in practice.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if something is not a criminal case, a perpetrator being confronted by the city, whether it’s NYPD or another agency, and being told that what they’ve done was very hurtful to another person\u201d<\/em>\u00a0could deter people from offending others, de Blasio told reporters on Thursday, in response to a rise in hate crime against Asian Americans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone has done something wrong, but not rising to a criminal level, it’s perfectly appropriate for an NYPD officer to talk to them to say, \u2018that was not appropriate, and if you did that on a higher level, that would be a crime,\u2019\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the mayor continued, before concluding ominously,\u00a0\u201cIf an NYPD officer calls you or shows up at your door to ask you about something you did, it makes people think twice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Many Americans on social media were not as receptive to the idea, however,\u00a0comparing<\/a>\u00a0the suggestion to\u00a0\u201cGestapo tactics\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and criticizing de Blasio’s vague definition of\u00a0\u201churtful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
