On Saturday, before noticing his accidental promotion by Google, Grenell complained about media coverage of Biden\u2019s fall including criticism of Donald Trump Jr\u2019s decision to tweet a gif showing his father knocking Biden over with a golf ball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">\u201cWashington DC types are killing humour and laughter,\u201d Grenell\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardGrenell\/status\/1373273862255747077\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">claimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">Few Democrats or Washington officials found much to laugh about in Grenell\u2019s time as acting director of national intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">In February last year, one unnamed former official\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2020\/02\/trumps-intelligence-community-goes-orwellian\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told Vanity Fair<\/a>\u00a0his appointment \u201cclearly, unambiguously\u201d represented \u201cthe politicisation of intelligence\u201d and said the former ambassador to Germany was Trump\u2019s \u201cguardian against fact\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">In the event, Grenell filled the role for three months before being replaced by John Ratcliffe, a former congressman many observers thought similarly unqualified and not the actual one,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardGrenell\/status\/1373288663098925059\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">included<\/a>\u00a0the demand that a liquid natural gas terminal \u201cbe built ASAP on the west coast of the United States (preferably in California)\u201d and that \u201cmultiple desalinisation plants [and] new nuclear power plants be built in California\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">\u201cOh,\u201d he added, \u201cand Eric Swalwell hereby loses his security clearance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">Swalwell, a California Democrat who briefly ran for the presidential nomination in 2020, was a House manager in Trump\u2019s second impeachment trial. Republicans have sought unsuccessfully to remove him from the House intelligence committee, over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/china-spy-california-politicians-9d2dfb99-f839-4e00-8bd8-59dec0daf589.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reports<\/a>\u00a0of links to a suspected Chinese spy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">By lunchtime on the east coast on Saturday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/google\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Google<\/a>\u00a0had fixed its mistake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">Grenell seems more likely to run for state than national office. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, is the subject of a recall attempt. In February, Grenell was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/02\/27\/richard-grenell-california-governor-trump-471827\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reported<\/a>\u00a0to have discussed a run with Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-puzfbd\">Speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida, Grenell\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/02\/27\/richard-grenell-california-governor-trump-471827\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a>: \u201cAnd of course, if a public official is still failing to deliver on their promises, and if you can\u2019t limit their term or recall them in time, there\u2019s always one other option.
