Google describes Richard Grenell, ex-intelligence chief and possible candidate for California governor, as \u2018president since 2021\u2019<\/h3>\n

Richard Grenell, a former acting director of national intelligence turned potential Republican candidate for governor of\u00a0California<\/a>, gleefully seized on an error by Google on Saturday, promising \u201ca plethora of executive orders\u201d after the search giant listed him as \u201cPresident of the United States since 2021\u201d.<\/p>\n

The former Trump aide also took a low shot at the actual president, Joe Biden,\u00a0tweeting<\/a>: \u201cI will run up the stairs without tripping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden stumbled\u00a0dramatically<\/a>\u00a0on Friday, as he climbed the stairs to Air Force One. On Saturday, before noticing his accidental promotion by Google, Grenell complained about media coverage of Biden\u2019s fall including criticism of Donald Trump Jr\u2019s decision to tweet a gif showing his father knocking Biden over with a golf ball.<\/p>\n

\u201cWashington DC types are killing humour and laughter,\u201d Grenell\u00a0claimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Few Democrats or Washington officials found much to laugh about in Grenell\u2019s time as acting director of national intelligence.<\/p>\n

In February last year, one unnamed former official\u00a0told Vanity Fair<\/a>\u00a0his appointment \u201cclearly, unambiguously\u201d represented \u201cthe politicisation of intelligence\u201d and said the former ambassador to Germany was Trump\u2019s \u201cguardian against fact\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the event, Grenell filled the role for three months before being replaced by John Ratcliffe, a former congressman many observers thought similarly unqualified and inappropriately partisan.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Grenell\u2019s first tweeted \u201cexecutive orders\u201d as the Google-anointed president, if not the actual one,\u00a0included<\/a>\u00a0the demand that a liquid natural gas terminal \u201cbe built ASAP on the west coast of the United States (preferably in California)\u201d and that \u201cmultiple desalinisation plants [and] new nuclear power plants be built in California\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh,\u201d he added, \u201cand Eric Swalwell hereby loses his security clearance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swalwell, a California Democrat who briefly ran for the presidential nomination in 2020, was a House manager in Trump\u2019s second impeachment trial. Republicans have sought unsuccessfully to remove him from the House intelligence committee, over\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0of links to a suspected Chinese spy.<\/p>\n

By lunchtime on the east coast on Saturday,\u00a0Google<\/a>\u00a0had fixed its mistake.<\/p>\n

Grenell seems more likely to run for state than national office. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, is the subject of a recall attempt. In February, Grenell was\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0to have discussed a run with Trump.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida, Grenell\u00a0said<\/a>: \u201cAnd of course, if a public official is still failing to deliver on their promises, and if you can\u2019t limit their term or recall them in time, there\u2019s always one other option. You can run against them yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
