The world\u2019s top cryptocurrency, bitcoin, is enjoying its moment in the sun, but could soon face major resistance by governments looking to rein in the decentralized currency, says the founder of Bridgewater Associates Ray Dalio.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery country treasures its monopoly on controlling the supply and demand. They don\u2019t want other monies to be operating or competing, because things can get out of control,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Dalio told Yahoo Finance.\u00a0\u201cSo, I think that it would be very likely that you will have it, under a certain set of circumstances, outlawed the way gold was outlawed.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

He\u00a0referenced a controversial 1934 act, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, that ended all private holding\u00a0and use of\u00a0gold\u00a0as money. The act also\u00a0established the exchange stabilization\u00a0fund as a reserve to stabilize the US dollar after the government abandoned the gold standard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to the veteran investor, the list of bitcoin\u2019s positive attributes includes its growing following, its security, and the ability to serve as an alternative asset and potentially a store of value.\u00a0\u201cBitcoin has proven itself over the last 10 years. \u2026 It\u2019s by and large worked on an operational basis. \u2026 Those are the pluses,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he explained.<\/p>\n

However, Dalio characterized bitcoin as a potential threat to government control of banking and money supply systems,\u00a0“because things can get out of control.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
