Putin closes off access to Black Sea after Biden\u2019s about-face on Ukraine<\/h1>\n

Russian President Vladimir Putin took advantage of the\u00a0Biden administration\u2019s decision to abandon plans<\/a>\u00a0to send two destroyers to the Black Sea by closing off the Kerch Strait, connecting Crimea to Russia, to foreign warships until next fall.<\/p>\n

The action comes as Russia warned the US on Tuesday to stay away from the area \u201cfor their own good\u201d after the Biden administration said it was going to send two destroyers \u2014 the USS Roosevelt and the USS Donald Cook \u2014 to the Black Sea in response to Moscow\u2019s increasing military presence near Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Putin will close the Kerch Strait beginning next week until October, blocking foreign warships that are conducting military exercises, including the US, the Ukraine foreign ministry said Thursday.<\/p>\n

The US and its allies slapped sanctions on Putin for illegally annexing Crimea in 2014.<\/p>\n

The Biden administration pulled back the two destroyers from steaming into the Black Sea after fighting intensified between Ukrainian and Russian-backed separatist forces in an effort to de-escalate the situation,\u00a0Politico reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have no desire to be in an escalating war with Russia,\u201d the\u00a0Daily Mail quoted<\/a>\u00a0a senior administration official as saying, who added that the White House doesn\u2019t want things \u201cspinning out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not seek a downward spiral. We can and think we can avoid that,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s action happened just hours after the\u00a0Biden administration declared a national emergency on Thursday,\u00a0slapping sanctions<\/a>\u00a0on more than three dozen people in Russia and expelling 10 diplomats.<\/p>\n
