China Outraged At Joint US-Japan Statement Which Invokes ‘Nuclear Defense’<\/h1>\n

During their late Friday press conference President\u00a0Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga – who is the first foreign leader to visit the White House of the new administration – issued a joint statement\u00a0lashing out a China for actions that “are inconsistent with the international rules-based order”<\/strong>\u00a0and impact\u00a0“peace and prosperity”<\/strong>\u00a0in the region. Thus it appears the\u00a0lengthy pressure campaign<\/a>\u00a0by the administration to get Suga to agree to sign off on a muscular joint statement aimed at China, particularly at a moment of soaring tensions over Taiwan, paid off.<\/p>\n

Included in the White House\u00a0statement is the following<\/a>: “We also recognize the importance of\u00a0deterrence to maintain peace and stability in the region<\/strong>. We oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East China Sea.\u00a0We reiterated our objections to China\u2019s unlawful maritime claims and activities in the South China Sea<\/strong>\u00a0and reaffirmed our strong shared interest in a free and open South China Sea governed by international law, in which freedom of navigation and overflight are guaranteed, consistent with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.”<\/p>\n

And further on Taiwan specifically the\u00a0statement added,\u00a0“We underscore the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait<\/strong>\u00a0and encourage the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues.”<\/p>\n

The Friday statement also said, “The United States restated its unwavering support for Japan\u2019s defense under the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security,\u00a0using its full range of capabilities,\u00a0including nuclear<\/em><\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

“Japan resolved to bolster its own national defense capabilities\u2026 The United States restated its unwavering support for Japan\u2019s defense\u2026 using its full range of capabilities, including nuclear,” it underscored.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
