Biden Mulls Vax Mandate For All US Military After Huge Numbers Refused<\/strong><\/h1>\n

President Biden told NBC News in an interview which broadcast Friday that he’s\u00a0mulling ordering all US military personnel to get a COVID-19 vaccine<\/strong>\u00a0as commander-in-chief.\u00a0“I\u2019m not saying I won\u2019t”\u00a0<\/strong>rule it out, he emphasized in the new interview.<\/p>\n

This would also mean that anyone wanting to enter military service would have to receive the jab as a requirement to get in, which would likely cause a blow to military recruitment in the near-term. However, he didn’t outright say he’s ready to pull the trigger on the policy, which if enacted\u00a0would constitute the largest federal government-ordered mandate<\/strong>\u00a0in terms of forcing the vaccine on some\u00a01.3 million active duty service members<\/strong>, not to mention over one million more reserve personnel.<\/p>\n

Describing the decision as a\u00a0“tough call” he suggested it was being hotly debated. “I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m going to leave that to the military,” Biden\u00a0told NBC News’s Craig Melvin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m not saying I won\u2019t.<\/strong>\u00a0I think you\u2019re going to see more and more of them getting it. And I think it\u2019s going to be a\u00a0tough call as to whether or not they should be required<\/strong>\u00a0to have to get it in the military,\u00a0because you\u2019re in such close proximity with other military personnel<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

In follow-up to Biden’s comments,\u00a0national security advisor\u00a0Jake Sullivan\u00a0confirmed<\/a>\u00a0that a DoD-wide\u00a0vaccine mandate is “something the Department of Defense is looking at in consultation with the interagency process and [I] don\u2019t have anything to add on that subject today.”<\/p>\n

The whole debate was sparked in earnest when multiple headlines earlier this month took note of the large numbers of military members who were rejecting the vaccine.<\/p>\n

For example, one recent\u00a0USA Today report<\/a>\u00a0noted that\u00a0nearly 40% of US Marines who have been offered a COVID-19 vaccine have refused to recieve\u00a0it<\/strong>, according to Pentagon figures. And an earlier report in\u00a0The Guardian\u00a0<\/em><\/a>described that “Reluctance to be vaccinated for Covid-19 is now rife in the\u00a0US military<\/strong>, with about\u00a0a third of troops\u00a0<\/strong>on active duty or in the national guard refusing to be administered the vaccine.”<\/p>\n

The Hill notes of the latest numbers as of\u00a0this week that<\/a>\u00a0“Roughly 780,000 service members, or close to one-third of the total force, are partially or fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to the latest Department of Defense numbers.”<\/p>\n

The broad reluctance among America’s military members to receive the jab probably has a lot to do with the vast majority being\u00a0young, fit, and healthy \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0obviously far above the average American.\u00a0<\/strong>And it’s clear at this point that this health demographic tends to experience fewer or minor symptoms\u00a0if they get infected,\u00a0if any symptoms at all<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Acting\u00a0Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Terry Adirim earlier this month tried to combat this mentality among military ranks, however,\u00a0calling the wealth of anecdotal evidence<\/a>\u00a0in the end “not true”. But so far it still looks like a large chunk of armed personnel are not convinced that the vaccine is worth getting, hence the Pentagon mulling the mandate.<\/p>\n
