Susan Collins said she was \u201cappalled\u201d by a crowd of Republican delegates at a convention in Utah\u00a0booing Sen. Mitt Romney<\/a>, warning that the GOP should be more accepting of opposing viewpoints \u2014 or it will become like the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n\u201cI was appalled, Mitt Romney is an outstanding senator who serves his state and our country well,\u201d Collins (R-Maine) said on\u00a0CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union\u201d\u00a0<\/a>on Sunday.<\/p>\nShe also defended\u00a0Rep. Liz Cheney\u00a0<\/a>(R-Wyo.) who has come under attack by some Republicans after\u00a0she voted to impeach\u00a0<\/a>former President Donald Trump over the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol.<\/p>\n\u201cLiz Cheney is a woman of strength and conscience, and she did what she felt was right, and I salute her for that. We need to be accepting of differences in our party,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t want to become like too much of the Democratic Party, which has been taken over by the progressive left. We need to have rooms for a variety of views,\u201d Collins continued.<\/p>\n
She said the Republican Party\u2019s foundational beliefs in personal responsibility, individual freedom, free markets and a strong national defense are the glue that holds the GOP together.<\/p>\n![\"Sen.]()
