As\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/12\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html\" data-ml-dynamic=\"true\" data-ml-dynamic-type=\"vg\" data-orig-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/12\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html\" data-ml-id=\"0\" data-ml=\"true\" data-xid=\"fr1620424378194adh\">reported<\/a>, starting in 2011, Gates met with Epstein on numerous occasions. This was three years after Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting an underage girl in Florida; by then, accusations that Epstein exploited girls and young women\u00a0<a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/jeffrey-epstein-pedophile-billionaire-and-his-sex-den\">were widely reported<\/a> in the press.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"PullQuote\">\n<div class=\"PullQuote__quote\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>\u201cIf you ask Bill Gates, he\u2019ll say, \u2018Oh I had absolutely no idea he wasn\u2019t up to anything of the highest moral character.\u2019 But I seriously doubted Epstein\u2019s moral character.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As the<em>\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/em>reported, two people close to Gates acted as intermediaries between the two:\u00a0<a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/jeffrey-epsteins-will-leaves-dollar577-million-to-mysterious-trust\">Boris Nikolic<\/a>, a biotech investor and former adviser to Gates who was mysteriously named a backup executor in Epstein\u2019s last will and testament; and Melanie Walker, who worked at the Gates Foundation and served as a science adviser to Epstein. A person close to Walker told The Daily Beast she did not attend nor help set up any meetings between Gates and Epstein. Nikolic did not return multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after Epstein\u2019s arrest in July 2019, Gates became one of many prominent people to face scrutiny over ties to the sex trafficker.<\/p>\n<p><em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>New York Times\u00a0<\/em><a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/12\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html\" data-ml-dynamic=\"true\" data-ml-dynamic-type=\"vg\" data-orig-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/12\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html\" data-ml-id=\"1\" data-ml=\"true\" data-xid=\"fr1620424378194ebh\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0Gates had met with Epstein at a 2011 get-together at Epstein\u2019s Manhattan townhouse that included the financier\u2019s ex-girlfriend\u00a0<a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/jeffrey-epstein-scandal-butler-for-glenn-and-eva-dubin-says-swedish-teen-told-him-she-was-pressured-for-sex\">Eva Andersson-Dubin<\/a>\u00a0and her daughter. (Virginia Giuffre, a survivor of Epstein\u2019s sex ring, has accused Dubin\u2019s hedge-funder husband, Glenn, of abuse\u2014a charge he has strenuously denied.)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0reported Gates visited Epstein\u00a0<a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/bill-gates-praised-pedophile-jeffrey-epstein-kind-of-intriguing\">multiple times from 2011 to 2013<\/a>, and that Epstein had tried pitching a new charitable fund to JPMorgan honchos and to the Gates Foundation. In 2013, Gates also took a ride on Epstein\u2019s private jet (christened by tabloids as the Lolita Express), from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey to Palm Beach, Florida, according to flight records reviewed by the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>.\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/14\/jeffrey-epstein-met-with-bill-gates-years-after-financier-served-jail-time.html\">CNBC also reported<\/a>\u00a0that Gates rendezvoused with Epstein in New York in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>When Gates first met Epstein, he was still Microsoft\u2019s chairman and the second richest person in the world, with a\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2011\/03\/08\/world-billionaires-2011-intro.html?sh=2426c1b52acc\">net worth of $56 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met him. I didn\u2019t have any business relationship or friendship with him,\u201d Gates said in September 2019, as media coverage into his connections with Epstein were heating up. \u201cI didn\u2019t go to New Mexico or Florida or Palm Beach or any of that. There were people around him who were saying, \u2018Hey, if you want to raise money for global health and get more philanthropy, he knows a lot of rich people.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery meeting where I was with him were meetings with men. I was never at any parties or anything like that. He never donated any money to anything that I know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One associate in the technology world who\u2019s attended the same events as Epstein, including a TED conference in Monterey, California, was surprised Gates had considered\u00a0<a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/bill-gates-praised-pedophile-jeffrey-epstein-kind-of-intriguing\">cultivating philanthropic ties<\/a>\u00a0with the late pedophile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t make the claim that so many are claiming,\u201d the person told The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity, referring to people in Epstein\u2019s orbit who\u2019ve said they had no suspicions of Epstein\u2019s abuse. \u201cIf you ask Bill Gates, he\u2019ll say, \u2018Oh I had absolutely no idea he wasn\u2019t up to anything of the highest moral character.\u2019 But I seriously doubted Epstein\u2019s moral character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people around him,\u201d the person added, referring to Epstein, \u201chad a varying spectrum of what they knew and what they didn\u2019t know and how they rationalized it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This person wasn\u2019t surprised that Melinda Gates was put off by Epstein, saying \u201ca lot of people were uncomfortable with Epstein, completely independent of his\u201d sexual misconduct. \u201cHe just was an obnoxious guy. He almost made a point of having bad manners, not paying attention at dinner\u2026 I could see how anybody, even without suspicions, would not want to be around him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, Epstein had a \u201csuperhuman\u201d ability as a social climber, the one-time colleague of the financier<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>said, adding that the photos displayed in Epstein\u2019s mansion of former President Bill Clinton and Pope John Paul II were \u201creally obnoxious, especially if you\u2019re somebody like Melinda and hanging around with heads of state anyway. Then to have someone do this endless name-dropping\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he got up from the table at dinner, he wouldn\u2019t just get up. He\u2019d tell you he had a call with a president of some country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epstein also reportedly had a habit of bragging that he was an unofficial adviser to Bill Gates\u2014a claim the Microsoft founder\u2019s representatives denied. One\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/22\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-business-wall-street.html\" data-ml-dynamic=\"true\" data-ml-dynamic-type=\"vg\" data-orig-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/22\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-business-wall-street.html\" data-ml-id=\"2\" data-ml=\"true\" data-xid=\"fr1620424378194iea\"><em>Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0report indicates Epstein claimed to be a tax consultant for the tech magnate.<\/p>\n<p>After his initial meeting with the financier, the billionaire philanthropist told Gates Foundation staff in an email: \u201cHis lifestyle is very different and kind of intriguing although it would not work for me.\u201d Asked about this message, Gates\u2019 spokeswoman said he \u201cwas referring only to the unique decor\u201d at Epstein&#8217;s Manhattan mansion and \u201cEpstein\u2019s habit of spontaneously bringing acquaintances in to meet Mr. Gates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rapport between Gates and Epstein seems to have fizzled in the fall of 2014, sometime after Gates donated $2 million to MIT\u2019s Media Lab. The lab\u2019s former director Joi Ito, in an internal email unearthed by\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/how-an-elite-university-research-center-concealed-its-relationship-with-jeffrey-epstein\"><em>The New Yorker<\/em><\/a>, claimed Epstein facilitated that donation. Walker, a neurosurgeon\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/team\/melanie-walker\">who worked for the Gates Foundation<\/a>\u00a0from late 2005 to 2013, had known Epstein since 1992. She told the\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/12\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html\" data-ml-dynamic=\"true\" data-ml-dynamic-type=\"vg\" data-orig-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/12\/business\/jeffrey-epstein-bill-gates.html\" data-ml-id=\"3\" data-ml=\"true\" data-xid=\"fr1620424378195gga\"><em>Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that she\u2019d just graduated from college and Epstein had offered to land her a modeling job at Victoria\u2019s Secret because he was an adviser to Les Wexner, the founder of the lingerie chain\u2019s parent company, L Brands.<\/p>\n<p>Walker once stayed in an Epstein-owned apartment in Manhattan while traveling to New York, and in 1998, she became the financier\u2019s science adviser. Within a few years, she moved to Seattle to be with her current partner, then-Microsoft executive Steven Sinofsky, and was hired by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation. There she met Nikolic, the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0report adds, and introduced him to Epstein.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Nikolic\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-19\/epstein-s-11th-hour-executor-is-ex-science-adviser-to-bill-gates\">told Bloomberg News<\/a>\u00a0he was \u201cshocked\u201d to be named as a \u201csuccessor executor\u201d in Epstein\u2019s will, a position he quickly turned down. \u201cI was not consulted in these matters and I have no intent to fulfill these duties, whatsoever,\u201d he said in a statement released by his spokeswoman in August 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Nikolic is a graduate of Harvard Medical School, where at least one faculty member received funding that was\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/president\/news\/2020\/report-regarding-jeffrey-epstein-s-connections-to-harvard\/\">facilitated by Epstein<\/a>. According to Bloomberg, Nikolic \u201cwaxed enthusiastic about Epstein\u2019s financial advice in discussions with private bankers\u201d in 2014, ahead of a public offering for a genome-editing firm Nikolic had funded.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Oembed\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=LachCartwright&amp;dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-1&amp;features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfX0%3D&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1163606518748651522&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedailybeast.com%2Fmelinda-gates-warned-bill-gates-about-jeffrey-epstein&amp;sessionId=b8e4fc954c9797639d69e6ae977602a9f987bd3a&amp;siteScreenName=thedailybeast&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=82e1070%3A1619632193066&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1163606518748651522\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Little is known about Nikolic and Epstein\u2019s relationship, though Bloomberg reported the biotech venture capitalist insisted they had no financial ties.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Linda Stone, an ex-Microsoft VP, appears to have longer-standing ties to Epstein and vouched for him at MIT. \u201cIto was introduced to Epstein in February 2013 by Linda Stone, a former member of the Media Lab\u2019s Advisory Council, at a TED Conference in Long Beach, California,\u201d said one\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"http:\/\/factfindingjan2020.mit.edu\/files\/MIT-report.pdf?200117\">2020 MIT report<\/a>\u00a0into Epstein\u2019s largesse reviewed by The Daily Beast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has a tainted past, but Linda assures me that he\u2019s awesome,\u201d Ito said in an email to three MIT staffers, according to the document. But, in June 2013, when a lab assistant raised questions about Epstein\u2019s checkered past, Ito asked Stone for help in avoiding a potential backlash over Epstein\u2019s donations to the MIT Media Lab. In an email cited in the MIT report, Stone advised Ito that Epstein had \u201cgiven a tremendous amount of money to Harvard\u201d and \u201cother scientists\u201d and it would be \u201cgood to show that list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFocus on his funding of Harvard, scientists, over many years,\u201d added Stone, whose tenure at Microsoft lasted from 1993 to 2002. In July 2019,\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>\u00a0reported the men were longtime friends, and that Epstein allegedly visited Myhrvold\u2019s investment firm, Intellectual Ventures, with \u201cyoung girls\u201d who were possibly \u201cRussian models\u201d in tow.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003,\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"http:\/\/vanityfair.com\/news\/2003\/03\/jeffrey-epstein-200303\"><em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>\u00a0named Myhrvold as one of the many businessmen to dine with Epstein at his Manhattan townhouse, and the 2019 article cites a source who claimed Myhrvold openly discussed visiting Epstein\u2019s homes in Florida and New York.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/every-flight-made-by-jeffrey-epsteins-private-jets-2020-7\">flight-records database<\/a>\u00a0shows Myhrvold traveled on Epstein\u2019s plane, in December 1996 and January 1997. Other passengers included Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz and \u201cGM,\u201d believed to be Epstein\u2019s alleged accomplice\u00a0<a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/epstein-pal-ghislaine-maxwell-is-accused-by-new-underage-victim-in-government-case\">Ghislaine Maxwell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When Giuffre sued Dershowitz for defamation in April 2019, her complaint alleged the famed lawyer attempted to throw Myhrvold under the bus. The document refers to Giuffre by her maiden name, Roberts. \u201cIn May 2015 Dershowitz requested confidential settlement negotiations with Ms. Roberts\u2019 lawyers in which Dershowitz sought to convince Ms. Roberts lawyer that Ms. Roberts was mistaken, and that the person to whom Epstein had lent Ms. Roberts was Nathan Myhrvold, not Dershowitz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit added that Giuffre \u201cwas, and is, clear that it was Dershowitz, not Myhrvold, with whom she had sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Myhrvold\u2019s spokesperson told\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>: \u201cNathan has no knowledge of or any involvement in the various crimes that Mr. Epstein is accused of committing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was never a client of his money-management business, and he\u2019s never done business with him of any sort,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cBack in the day Epstein was a regular at TED conferences and he was a large donor to basic scientific research, so while Nathan knew him and has socialized with him, that\u2019s exactly where their association ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Myhrvold did, however, take a trip to Russia with tech journalist and conference host Esther Dyson sometime in the 1990s, and spent time with Epstein there.<\/p>\n<p>When reached by The Daily Beast, Dyson said that Epstein joined her and Myhrvold for a couple of days when their itineraries intersected in Sarov. Another image of Myhrvold includes the caption: \u201cat Microsoft Russia in Moscow, April 98.
