William Shakespeare, 1st man in world to get approved COVID vaccine, dies at 81<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first man in the world to receive a clinically approved coronavirus vaccine has died of an unrelated illness, British officials confirmed Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The 81-year-old Englishman, named William Shakespeare, was the first man and second person to get a Pfizer jab after the U.K. approved the experimental shots in early December. The first person was 90-year-old British grandmother\u00a0Margaret Keenan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shakespeare died Thursday, but the cause of death was not immediately known, according to the\u00a0BBC<\/a>. The Coventry resident had reportedly worked at Rolls Royce and served as a parish councilor for many years in the city\u2019s Allesley community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He made\u00a0international headlines<\/a> after getting inoculated at University Hospital Coventry, a major milestone in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. His name helped draw even more attention \u2014 and jokes \u2014 to that special moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Some on social media referred to the scene as \u201cThe Taming of the Flu,\u201d a reference to author William Shakespeare\u2019s 16th-century play \u201cThe Taming of the Shrew.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The vaccinated Shakespeare was also an active supporter of the local Labour Party, according to multiple Twitter posts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBill will be remembered for many things, including a taste for mischief,\u201d said Coventry council member Jayne Innes, who\u00a0described Shakespeare<\/a>\u00a0as an \u201cinternational sensation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He is survived by his wife, Joy, their two sons and several grandchildren, the BBC reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
