DeSantis defies NCAA threats over women\u2019s sports: \u2018To hell with these events\u2019<\/h1>\n

‘You can\u2019t be cowed by these organizations, or particularly by woke corporations, from doing the right thing.’<\/em><\/h3>\n

June 4, 2021 (LifeSiteNews<\/a>) \u2014\u00a0Boycott threats by institutions like the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) cannot be allowed to intimidate public officials from doing the right thing, Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis told Fox News primetime host Tucker Carlson Tuesday.<\/p>\n

DeSantis signed<\/a> into law this week the Fairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act, which excludes biological males who claim transgender status from competing with the opposite sex in sex-specific athletic programs. The law is meant to protect female high-school and college athletes from having competitive and scholarship opportunities undermined by male students who claim to be \u201ctransgender women.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs these bills were going through various legislatures, I remember the NCAA put out a statement saying any state that enacts this, we\u2019re not going to hold events there. And so I called the Speaker of the House in Florida and I said, \u2018Did you hear what they said?\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah.\u2019\u00a0I said, \u2018We definitely got to get this done,\u2019\u201d DeSantis recounted<\/a> to Carlson. \u201cYou can\u2019t be cowed by these organizations, or particularly by woke corporations, from doing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so my view was throughout this whole time, we have to protect our girls, it is discriminatory to force them to compete against biological males,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd so if the price of having a tournament is that I have to deny equal opportunity to hundreds of thousands of young girl and women athletes throughout Florida, I am much more willing to stand with the girls. And to hell with these events.\u201d<\/p>\n

The governor added that he does not expect Florida to be punished for defying outside pressure, because \u201cwe just made it clear. We\u2019re standing with our folks, we\u2019re gonna do the right thing. And so if corporations want to come in and try to bully us around, they are going to go nowhere. It\u2019s going to be like hitting their head against a brick wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

LGBT activists claim it\u2019s \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d to reserve female competitive sports for actual females, but\u00a0scientific research affirms that testosterone suppression does not eliminate all the physical advantages that come with male physiology.<\/p>\n

In a paper published by the Journal of Medical Ethics<\/em>, New Zealand researchers found that<\/a>\u201chealthy young men [do]\u00a0not lose significant muscle mass [or power]\u00a0when their circulating testosterone levels were reduced to [below International Olympic Committee guidelines]\u00a0for 20 weeks,\u201d and \u201cindirect effects of testosterone\u201d on factors such as bone structure, lung volume, and heart size \u201cwill not be altered by hormone therapy\u201d; therefore, \u201cthe advantage to transwomen [biological men]\u00a0afforded by the [International Olympic Committee]\u00a0guidelines is an intolerable unfairness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Such laws are now on the books in eight states. In thanking DeSantis for signing the Fairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act, American Principles Project president Terry Schilling noted that the more states come on board, the less power the NCAA\u2019s threats have: \u201cWhile economic boycott threats might have worked against a single state, the strength of many state leaders standing together to defend women\u2019s sports is certain to neutralize the left\u2019s favorite playbook.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis\u2019s approach contrasts sharply with that of South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem<\/a>, who in March declared she was \u201cexcited\u201d to sign a similar bill, but following a barrage of media and corporate pressure, Noem reversed herself at the last minute, announcing she was sending the bill back to the legislature over sudden reservations about its \u201cvague and overly broad language,\u201d and suggesting various \u201cstyle and form\u201d changes that would have effectively gutted the bill.<\/p>\n

DeSantis reiterated the importance of standing up and representing conservatives in an interview<\/a> with The Federalist<\/em> published Wednesday. \u201cYou can have a successful economy, but if the underpinnings of the culture are being torn apart, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a society that will be very successful over the long term,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever been as many hostile cultural forces, whether it\u2019s corporate media, universities, big tech, now big business,\u201d he argued. \u201cIf you\u2019re an American who believes in the core values of this country \u2014 faith, family, opportunity \u2014 you are absolutely on the defensive in many respects, so the question is, how do you fight back effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you lead and particularly if you\u2019re willing to take some arrows along the way, there are voters that will do whatever they can to make sure they have your back,\u201d the governor noted. \u201cStop trying to grovel in front of [corporate media outlets], stop thinking that they\u2019re going to like you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sports law is only the latest in a string of actions DeSantis has taken that have pleased conservatives, such as banning left-wing critical race theory from public schools<\/a>, forbidding \u201cvaccine passports\u201d that would coerce Floridians into taking a COVID-19 vaccine against their will<\/a>, pardoning residents who violate local COVID-19 restrictions<\/a>, increasing penalties for rioting<\/a>, limiting social media giants\u2019 power to deplatform their political enemies<\/a>, and signing an election law that strengthens signature verification for mail ballots and bans ballot harvesting<\/a>. This record has made DeSantis a top contender for the GOP\u2019s 2024 presidential nomination in the minds of many conservatives.<\/p>\n
