County sheriff said this year is looking even more grim, and he\u2019s blaming the widespread uptick in crime on District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u201cIn 2021, that 36 percent has now become 92 percent, which is a huge statistical jump,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Sheriff Alex Villanueva told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing increases in all the categories &#8211; assault with a deadly weapon, arson, rape&#8230;\u00a0 these things are continuing upward unabated.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The widespread uptick in crime is the direct result of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-george-gascon\">Gasc\u00f3n<\/a>\u2019s election as DA of L.A. (John Fredricks\/The Epoch Times)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Gasc\u00f3n has defended his reform policies, criminals in prison are toasting the DA to celebrate their early release, according to officials\u2014and the sheriff said the DA\u2019s policies are making it more difficult for him to do his job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re supposed to have a district attorney who represents the people \u2026\u00a0 but [he\u2019s] acting like a public defender,\u201d Villanueva said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no one left representing the people. I need to work in partnership with the person who\u2019s representing the people. I don\u2019t have that right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Impacting Public Safety<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s attempt to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/SPECIAL-DIRECTIVE-20-07.pdf\">reimagine public safety<\/a>\u201d with a series of new policies, or directives, has been widely<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/new-la-das-reforms-draw-ire-from-victims-former-da_3634824.html\">\u00a0criticized<\/a>\u00a0by deputy district attorneys, lawyers, current and former officials, and families of victims. Now, the DA is facing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/signature-gathering-approved-for-recall-effort-against-da-george-gascon_3825513.html\">recall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cHad he campaigned on what he did once he took office and established those special directives \u2026 he\u2019d have lost in a landslide. (Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In his view, those\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/policies\">directives<\/a>\u2014which include eliminating the death penalty, abolishing sentencing enhancements like the Three Strikes law, and refusing to prosecute older juvenile offenders as adults for violent crimes\u2014are having a major impact on public safety.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s just gonna make a very, very dangerous place a lot more unlivable,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>said Villanueva, adding that African-American and Latino communities are going to be impacted the most\u2014the same communities that Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s reforms aim to protect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not going to impact the Gasc\u00f3ns of the world and their supporters, their campaign contributors \u2026 the people that live behind their mansions where they have their private security\u2014no, no, no,\u201d Villanueva said. \u201cThose poorest neighborhoods [with] the highest crime rate, they\u2019re gonna see [the impact] immediately. (John Fredricks\/The Epoch Times)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018That\u2019s How Bad the Situation Currently Is\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n maintains that his policies have produced the results he intended.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI have instituted a series of reforms based on data and science that will enhance safety while reducing racial disparities and the misuse of incarceration. Our efforts to transform a dated approach that creates more crimes, victims and inequities are just beginning,\u201d he wrote in a March 17\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/media\/news\/district-attorney-george-gascon-outlines-reforms-made-during-first-100-days-office-promises-more\">press release<\/a>\u00a0that reflected upon his first 100 days in office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are doing all of this because the science and data tell us so. We can truly enhance public safety, increase equity, expand victim services and strengthen police accountability.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Villanueva dismissed Gascon\u2019s claims as \u201chogwash.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cHe believes, bizarrely, that somehow by letting people out, it\u2019s going to improve or lower recidivism, [and] that keeping people locked up longer increases recidivism. And I\u2019d say he has no facts to support that at all. No science is going to back that,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Villanueva said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re claiming that victims of violent crime want to see more rehabilitation and less consequences in terms of incarceration, and that\u2019s news to me. \u2026 Every single victim of violent crime\u2014parents of murdered kids, for example\u2014that\u2019s not what they\u2019re saying at all.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In his press release, Gasc\u00f3n cited a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/allianceforsafetyandjustice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/201904-CALIFORNIA-REPORT-FINAL-FINAL.pdf\">survey<\/a>\u00a0conducted by Californians for Safety and Justice that reported \u201cstrong majorities of Californian crime survivors support changes to the justice system that would increase rehabilitation and reduce mandated sentences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>But Villanueva said this approach overlooks the \u201cnoble fallacy that somehow everyone is redeemable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThere are people that are not,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>he added.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the elimination of strict legal repercussions is sending the wrong message to perpetrators, Villanueva said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMr. Gasc\u00f3n is telling the criminal community it\u2019s OK to commit violent crime because you will not face the same consequences in the past,\u201d he said. \u201cRight now, they\u2019re toasting Gasc\u00f3n in the state prison for a reason.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The L.A. sheriff pointed to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iyUDow7uIwc\">video<\/a>\u00a0of Phillip Dorsett, an inmate at New Folsom State Prison\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-killer-expecting-early-release-celebrates-new-policies-of-la-county-district-attorney-from-prison\">sentenced<\/a>\u00a0to 40 years to life for murdering a rival gang member in 2005.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cRight here with my cellie. \u2026 Celebrating us going home on this Gasc\u00f3n\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/SPECIAL-DIRECTIVE-20-14.pdf\">directive<\/a>. Whoop!\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Dorsett said, toasting with prison moonshine known as \u201cwhite lightning.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Greg Totten, CEO of the California District Attorneys Association, which made the video public in March,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdaa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/CDAA-Press-release-3.9.2021-Prison.pdf\">said<\/a>\u00a0the footage offers \u201ccompelling proof that violent criminals, not victims, will be the beneficiaries of [Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s] radical policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added Villanueva, \u201cImagine we\u2019re flooded with a bunch of newly released inmates from the state prison system\u2014who are still in the prime of their crime-prone years\u2014and they come back to L.A. That\u2019s how bad the situation currently is.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Recall Effort Ramps Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If the families of violent-crime\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/new-la-das-reforms-draw-ire-from-victims-former-da_3634824.html\">victims<\/a>\u00a0have their say, Gasc\u00f3n will face a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-recall\">recall<\/a>\u00a0in 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u201cHe clearly is not here for the victims. He\u2019s here for the suspects,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Tania Owen, co-chair of the recall campaign, told The Epoch Times.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For Owen, a 32-year veteran of the L.A. County Sheriff\u2019s Department, the consequences of Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s reforms hit close to home.\u00a0Her husband, Sgt. Steve Owen, was murdered in the line of duty in Lancaster on Oct. 5, 2016. The man who shot him, Trenton Trevon Lovell, originally faced life in prison without parole, or the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s reforms would have taken those options off the table, allowing Lovell to serve 20 to 25 years before being released. Last month, however, Lovell surprised Owen by pleading guilty to all charges, including the sentencing enhancements.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to me because he could have very easily fought this and gone to court and likely received less time,\u201d Owen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he took the maximum, which effectively means he is going to die in prison. At least he, the murderer, had more empathy for my family than the district attorney, who should be the one protecting us.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While Owen has seen justice in her case, her fight for the families of other victims continues. That\u2019s why she\u2019s helping spearhead the effort to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/recallgeorgegascon.com\/\">Recall George Gasc\u00f3n<\/a>, alongside Villanueva, former L.A. DA Steve Cooley, former L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/gascon-policies-prompt-no-confidence-motions-from-14-cities_3824603.html\">14 cities<\/a>\u00a0that have issued no-confidence resolutions against Gasc\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cHe is not following the law, and we want accountability,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Owen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrime in Los Angeles has skyrocketed in the very short amount of time that he has been here. There has been more aggression towards law enforcement because criminals know that they\u2019re going to have it easy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>In response, Gasc\u00f3n has defended his policies. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeorgeGascon\/status\/1369768284883542023\">tweet<\/a>, he called opposition to them \u201cbacklash against reform fueled by conservative media, law enforcement unions &amp; other \u2018tough-on-crime\u2019 types.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFrom fear mongering to scare tactics, we are watching history repeat itself. But this time, reform will prevail,\u201d he stated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Villanueva indicated the movement against Gasc\u00f3n is growing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u201cIf [the recall] doesn\u2019t go through, you\u2019re going to have a lot more angry residents building up, day in and day out,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>he said, adding that he expects to see more cities issuing no-confidence resolutions in the near future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Recall campaign organizers have until Oct. 27 to collect 580,000 qualified signatures\u2014about 10 percent of L.A. County\u2019s voters.
