Every sheriff in the state of Utah signed a letter saying they would try to safeguard the Second Amendment in the midst of proposed legislation and recent executive orders authorized by President Joe Biden.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cImportantly, the Second Amendment of our divinely inspired Constitution clearly states \u2026 \u2018the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed<\/strong>,\u2019\u201d\u00a0said the statement (pdf)<\/a>, signed by all 29 sheriffs in the state, and was released via Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hereby recognize a significant principle underlying the Second Amendment: the right to keep and bear arms is indispensable to the existence of a free people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Their letter and promise were \u201cprompted by increasing public concern\u201d over constitutional rights, namely the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs your elected Sheriffs, we individually and collectively pledge to do everything within our power to steadfastly protect the Second Amendment and all other individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution<\/strong>,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand the destructive influences currently existing in our country will only relent when women and men everywhere genuinely care for each other. We must rely on Providence and care deeply about preserving the Constitution and its freedoms in order to be a strong and prosperous people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While the letter did not make mention of any specific elected officials, bills, or orders at the federal or state level, Democrats in Congress have recently introduced or passed several bills that would\u00a0enhance<\/a>\u00a0background checks,\u00a0ban magazines<\/a>\u00a0that hold more than 10 rounds, and would\u00a0ban<\/a>\u00a0so-called \u201cassault weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Separately, a rule introduced this month by the\u00a0Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) at the request of the Biden administration would reclassify firearms that have stabilizing pistol braces as illegal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen individuals use accessories to convert pistols into short-barreled rifles, they must comply with the heightened regulations on those dangerous and easily concealable weapons,\u201d the Department of Justice said\u00a0earlier this month<\/a>\u00a0about the rules. The DOJ also argued that the braces allow people to easily \u201cconvert pistols into these more dangerous weapons\u201d without going through a background check or meeting other requirements.<\/p>\n

White House press secretary Jen Psaki\u00a0suggested<\/a>\u00a0in April that\u00a0Biden has an appetite to issue orders relating to gun-control<\/strong>, which came after he announced executive actions to regulate so-called \u201cghost guns\u201d and introduced proposals for \u201cred flag\u201d laws.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president is not going to wait for Congress to act to take additional executive actions\u2014this is the beginning,\u201d she said at the time.<\/p>\n

Republicans have expressed near-unanimous opposition to the Democrat-backed legislation on guns, as well as Biden\u2019s recent orders. At the state level, several governors have recently signed bills that would\u00a0classify<\/a>\u00a0their states as \u201cSecond Amendment Sanctuary States.\u201d<\/p>\n
