{"id":70953,"date":"2021-06-26T18:20:28","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T22:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=70953"},"modified":"2021-06-26T18:22:27","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T22:22:27","slug":"blow-up-republicans-libtard-professors-can-get-away-with-anything","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=70953","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Blow Up Republicans&#8221; &#8212; LIbtard professors can get away with anything"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>&#8220;Blow Up Republicans&#8221;<\/strong>: UNC (Wilmington) Professor Triggers Firestorm With Call For Killing Conservatives<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->Authored by Jonathan Turley<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uncw.edu\/chhs\/shahs\/about\/johnson.html\">Dan Johnson<\/a>\u00a0is an associate professor at the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences at University of North Carolina Wilmington with apparently equal interest in politics and polytechnics.\u00a0<strong>He posted a short but clear message on Facebook: \u201cBlow Up Republicans.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/johnsond.jpg?itok=SGe3WO5O\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/johnsond.jpg?itok=SGe3WO5O\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/johnsond.jpg?itok=SGe3WO5O\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"627\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"058a291b-e94e-4309-a99a-7d68c2a66100\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/04\/28\/barnard-professor-triggers-free-speech-controversy-after-writing-about-detonating-and-gassing-white-people\/\">The detonation of people seems to be in vogue with professors this year<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As will come as little surprise to many on this blog, I do not believe Johnson should face discipline for his violent political ideations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=17701\">Campus Reform reports<\/a>\u00a0objections to the handling of the controversy by the school, which only stated\u00a0<strong>that \u201c[t]he university was made aware of the post and has appropriately addressed it.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Johnson took down the posting.<\/p>\n<p>Haylie Davis, a former student of Johnson\u2019s, is quoted as objecting to the lack of more serious action and notes that\u00a0<strong>the school would not be so circumspect \u201cif the word \u2018Republican\u2019 was replaced with any other word. If the post stated \u2018Blow up women,\u2019 \u2018Blow up homosexuals,\u2019 \u2018Blow up Catholics,\u2019 etc.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is a good point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We have discussed the sharply different treatment given statements by faculty depending on their political or social perspectives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have defended faculty who have made similarly disturbing comments\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/10\/09\/antifa-supporting-professor-triggers-free-speech-fight-after-calling-for-the-death-of-all-police-by-strangulation-with-the-intestines-of-the-last-capitalist\/\">denouncing police<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/01\/30\/republicans-need-to-suffer-drake-professor-triggers-free-speech-debate-with-hateful-tweets-against-men-and-conservatives\/\">calling for Republicans to suffer<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/10\/09\/antifa-supporting-professor-triggers-free-speech-fight-after-calling-for-the-death-of-all-police-by-strangulation-with-the-intestines-of-the-last-capitalist\/\">strangling police officers<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/02\/19\/a-desire-that-they-suffered-until-their-last-breath-alabama-professor-under-fire-for-hateful-comments-following-rush-limbaughs-death\/\">celebrating the death of conservatives<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/02\/02\/more-of-this-please-professor-tweets-call-for-the-death-of-trump-supporters\/\">calling for the killing of Trump supporters<\/a>, supporting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/09\/09\/i-see-nothing-wrong-with-it-rhode-island-professor-defends-murder-of-right-wing-protester-in-portland\/\">murder of conservative protesters\u00a0<\/a>and other outrageous statements. These comments were not protested as creating an \u201cunsafe environment\u201d and were largely ignored by universities. However, professors and students are routinely investigated, suspended, and sanctioned for countervailing views. There were also controversies at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2014\/11\/10\/miller-young-and-university-of-california-sued-over-campus-assault-on-pro-life-advocates\/\">University of California<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2015\/05\/22\/news-calls-for-termination-of-saidi-grundy-after-disclosure-of-prior-criminal-impersonation-of-another-woman\/\">Boston University<\/a>, where there have been criticism of such a double standard,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2014\/11\/10\/miller-young-and-university-of-california-sued-over-campus-assault-on-pro-life-advocates\/\">even in the face of criminal conduct<\/a>. There was also such an incident at the University of London involving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2015\/10\/07\/university-of-london-diversity-officer-charged-with-threatening-communications-after-racist-and-sexist-comments\/\">Bahar Mustafa<\/a>\u00a0as well as one involving a University of Pennsylvania professor. Some intolerant statements against students are deemed free speech while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2017\/06\/05\/evergreen-state-college-faculty-sign-letter-supporting-students-accused-of-abusing-professor\/\">others are deemed hate speech<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2017\/12\/21\/university-of-california-san-diego-investigates-student-after-he-posted-pro-steinle-flyers\/\">basis for university action<\/a>. There is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/02\/19\/study-unc-stifles-free-speech-and-conservative-students-are-300-times-more-likely-to-self-censure-views\/\">lack of consistency or uniformity<\/a>\u00a0in these actions which turn on the specific groups left aggrieved by out-of-school comments.\u00a0 There is also a tolerance of faculty and students t<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/03\/13\/im-terrified-of-your-organization-cmu-professor-admits-to-tearing-down-fliers-for-conservative-group\/\">earing down fliers<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2019\/11\/06\/no-free-speech-for-overtly-racist-old-white-dudes-northwestern-protesters-force-the-cancelation-of-jeff-sessions-event\/\">stopping the speech of conservatives<\/a>.\u00a0 Indeed, even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2018\/10\/17\/california-professor-who-assaulted-pro-life-advocates-is-featured-by-oregon-to-help-students-embrace-the-radical-potential-of-black-feminism-in-our-everyday-lives\/\">faculty who assaulted pro-life advocates was supported by faculty and lionized for her activism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As we have previously discussed (<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2016\/12\/26\/oregon-professor-causes-firestorm-over-black-face-costume-worn-at-party-off-campus\/\">with an Oregon professor<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/05\/01\/a-gross-necropolitical-calculation-rutgers-professor-charges-trump-and-white-conservatives-with-using-the-virus-to-kill-black-people\/\">Rutgers professor)<\/a>, there remains an uncertain line in what language is protected for teachers in their private lives. A conservative North Carolina professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/06\/09\/north-carolina-professor-triggers-a-free-speech-fight-over-inflammatory-tweet\/\">\u00a0faced calls for termination over controversial tweets and was pushed to retire<\/a>. Dr. Mike Adams, a professor of sociology and criminology, had long been a lightning rod of controversy.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2014\/03\/21\/conservative-criminology-professor-wins-jury-decision-over-retaliation-by-the-university-of-north-carolina-wilmington\/\">In 2014, we discussed his prevailing in a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0that alleged discrimination due to his conservative views.\u00a0 He was then targeted again after an inflammatory tweet calling North Carolina a \u201cslave state.\u201d\u00a0 That led to his being pressured to resign with a settlement. He then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/07\/28\/unc-wilmington-professor-mike-adams-died-by-suicide-deputies\/\">committed suicide<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/12\/31\/free-speech-does-not-exist-outside-of-its-social-context-mcgill-student-seek-to-strip-professor-of-emeritus-status\/\">efforts to fire professors<\/a>\u00a0who voice dissenting views on various issues<\/strong>\u00a0including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/06\/11\/writers-and-academics-call-for-removal-of-chicago-professor-for-criticizing-blm-and-defunding-police\/\">an effort to oust a leading economist from the University of Chicago<\/a>\u00a0as well as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/07\/09\/harvard-professor-under-fire-in-latest-attack-on-free-speech\/\">leading linguistics professor at Harvard<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/07\/23\/penn-professor-faces-calls-for-his-removal-after-questioning-an-anti-racism-statement\/\">a literature professor at Penn<\/a>. Sites like\u00a0<em>Lawyers, Guns, and Money<\/em>\u00a0feature writers like Colorado Law Professor Paul Campus who call for the firing of those with opposing views (<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/11\/13\/colorado-professor-compares-questioning-voting-results-to-holocaust-denial\/\">including myself<\/a>).\u00a0 Such campaigns have targeted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/07\/30\/this-is-a-new-day-folks-professor-threatens-k-12-teachers-who-post-pro-police-anti-black-rhetoric\/\">teachers<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/12\/27\/their-campus-careers-are-over-cornell-student-representatives-targeted-for-opposing-efforts-to-defund-and-disarm-campus-police\/\">students<\/a>\u00a0who contest the evidence of systemic racism in the use of lethal force by police or offer other opposing views in current debates over the pandemic,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/02\/25\/st-josephs-university-professor-suspended-for-criticism-of-reparations-on-social-media\/\">reparations<\/a>, electoral fraud, or other issues.<\/p>\n<p>It is not just universities. Almost on the one-year anniversary of its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/06\/05\/mea-culpa-new-york-times-caves-to-protests-and-apologizes-for-posting-conservative-opinion\/\">condemning its own publication<\/a>\u00a0of a column by Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. (and forcing out its own editor), the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/06\/06\/the-dark-anniversary-of-the-self-censorship-of-the-new-york-times\/\">published an academic columnist who previously defended the killing of conservative protesters<\/a>. Over at the Washington Post this week, the newspaper\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/06\/19\/wapo-promotes-writer-who-said-karens-lucky-blacks-didnt-call-for-revenge\/\">promoted a columnist<\/a>, Karen Attiah, who last summer caused an outrage after she tweeted \u201cWhite women are lucky that we are just calling them Karens. And not calling for revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite the bias and hypocrisy shown by universities, I still would defend Johnson and his right to express such views on social media. Unfortunately, such hyperbolic and violent language is common today.<\/strong>\u00a0While academics should be examples of greater tolerance and civility, the danger of such regulation is greater than the cost of such speech.
