The overnight US airstrikes on Iraqi militias believed to have links to Iran have provoked a furious reaction from Baghdad, with both the PM and the country\u2019s military condemning them as a \u201cblatant violation\u201d of Iraqi sovereignty.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe condemn the US air attack that targeted a site last night on the Iraqi-Syrian border, which represents a blatant and unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty and Iraqi national security,\u201d<\/em> a statement from Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi\u2019s office said on Monday.<\/p>\n

Iraq\u2019s military has produced a similar statement, issuing a rare condemnation of the activities of its ally. In a statement\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0to Twitter by spokesman Yehia Rasool, the military described the strikes as a\u00a0\u201cbreach of sovereignty,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0stressing that the nation refuses to become the arena for third parties to settle their scores.<\/p>\n

The military also urged all the parties to\u00a0\u201cavoid escalation in all its forms,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0promising, albeit rather vaguely, to carry out all the investigations and procedures needed to avoid such incidents in the future.<\/p>\n

The overnight strikes targeted at least three locations along the Iraq-Syria border, with one of them being located inside Iraqi territory. All the facilities have been\u00a0\u201cutilized by Iran-backed militias,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0according to the Pentagon and were allegedly used to stage drone attacks against US personnel stationed in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs demonstrated by this evening\u2019s strikes, President Biden has been clear that he will act to protect US personnel,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the US military said in a statement.<\/p>\n

While the US military did not elaborate whether anyone was killed or injured in the attacks, Iraqi militia groups have confirmed that at least four members of Kataib Sayyed al-Shuhada militia were killed in the strikes.<\/p>\n

The US attacks have been also condemned by Iran, which is believed to have close links to the affected groups. Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh warned Washington against\u00a0\u201ccreating crisis\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in the region, stating it would ultimately backfire on the US itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertainly, what the United States is doing is disrupting security in the region, and one of the victims of this disruption will be the United States,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the official stated.<\/p>\n
