New Study Finds COVID-19 ‘Very Well Adapted’ To Specifically Infect Humans<\/strong><\/h1>\n

An Australian team of researchers has published a new study which found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19,\u00a0appears to be specifically adapted to attack human cells<\/strong>, according to the\u00a0Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Flinders University professor and vaccine researcher Dr Nikolai Petrovsky was part of a team that discovered that Covid-19 is uniquely adapted to attack human cells.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The scientists from Flinders University and La Trobe used powerful computers to model the protein receptors in a number of animal species to see how the coronavirus\u2019s spike protein attached itself to them.<\/em><\/p>\n

The theory was that if the coronavirus attached itself readily to an animal like a bat or a pangolin, it would have likely been the species that the bug used to make its leap into the human population.<\/em><\/p>\n

However,\u00a0the modelling found that the coronavirus\u2019s spike protein was best suited to attacking protein receptors in humans<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“The computer modelling found\u00a0the virus\u2019s ability to bind to the bat ACE2 protein was poor relative to its ability to bind human cells<\/strong>,” said Flinders University epidemiologist and vaccine researcher Professor Nikolai Petrovsky, adding “This argues against the virus being transmitted directly from bats to humans.”<\/p>\n

“Hence, if the virus has a natural source, it could only have come to humans via an intermediary species which has yet to be found.”<\/p>\n

Other animals found to be\u00a0relative\u00a0<\/em>susceptible to infection include\u00a0pangolins, dogs and cats – all of which have been ruled out as an intermediary species<\/strong>\u00a0between bats and humans.<\/p>\n

“Overall, putting aside the intriguing pangolin ACE2 results,\u00a0our study showed that the COVID-19 virus was very well adapted to infect humans<\/strong>,” Professor Petrovsky said.<\/p>\n

The findings lend more weight to the lab-origin theory, which postulates that researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology became infected with SARS-CoV-2 and inadvertently spread the disease,\u00a0or<\/em>\u00a0that it was intentionally released.<\/p>\n

The Australian team’s\u00a0report<\/a>,\u00a0In silico comparison of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-ACE2 binding affinities across species and implications for virus origin,\u00a0<\/em>can be found in the journal Scientific Reports.<\/p>\n
