(Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\"><\/div>\n<p>Of the close to 500 arrests made so far in connection with the Jan. 6 incident, lawyers John Pierce and Steven Metcalf II, who represent several of the defendants, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/jan-6-detainees-confined-23-hrs-day-risking-all-for-american-dream_3885912.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EpochTV\u2019s \u201cThe Nation Speaks\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<strong>some detainees who are being held pre-trial face solitary confinement for 23 hours a day in conditions that are \u201cunconstitutional\u201d and violate \u201cevery single basic human right.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pierce explained that these individuals are being detained by federal judges under the 1984 Bail Reform Act, which, under certain circumstances, authorizes pre-trial detention if it is believed the individuals are a threat to the community or a flight risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>There are about 50 plus or minus that are being detained<\/strong>, that have been in prison for months and will likely remain in prison for many more months until their day in court,\u201d said Pierce.<\/p>\n<p>Ned Lang, the father of a defendant who he said is receiving particularly harsh treatment, said that his son Jake is currently detained in a Washington, D.C. prison in an area called \u201cthe hole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe [Jake] has no access to when Steve [his attorney] goes down and talks to him \u2026 he has no access to a private interview with an attorney. It\u2019s like you\u2019re in a third-world country, it\u2019s unbelievable,\u201d said Lang. \u201cFrom what he\u2019s telling me and what I\u2019m hearing,\u00a0<strong>it\u2019s solitary confinement 23 hours and one hour out a day, it\u2019s horrible<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are Americans, we have individual rights, we have our Bill of Rights.\u00a0<strong>This is inhumane treatment.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expanding on Jake\u2019s treatment in detention, Metcalf charged that he is being denied his constitutional rights by having restricted access to defense counsel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I\u2019m being told the water is black\u2014he has to filter the water through a sock in order to even drink water<\/strong>,\u201d the lawyer said. \u201cIn addition to only going out one hour a day,\u00a0<strong>there\u2019s also the weekend where he doesn\u2019t get out at all, and he\u2019s not able to use a shower, get a shave for days on end.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These conditions for pre-trial detainees, said Metcalf, are unusual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conditions in the D.C. jail in particular are getting to a point of not only being unconstitutional and violating every single basic human right, but they\u2019re getting to a point where people have to speak out, and they have to know about what\u2019s going on,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metcalf accused authorities of instilling a \u201clevel of fear\u201d throughout all of the inmates,<\/strong>\u00a0but added that it is unclear who is to blame for the conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything that they do, or\u00a0<strong>if anybody speaks up on their behalf, all of a sudden, they get targeted even further and then get put into a dangerous, unsanitary condition<\/strong>,\u201d the attorney said.<\/p>\n<p>Testifying at\u00a0an oversight hearing held by the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee last month, FBI Director Chris Wray\u00a0said that the FBI had divided the tens of thousands of protesters who were at the Capitol on Jan. 6 into three groups: \u201cpeaceful, maybe rowdy\u201d protesters who didn\u2019t participate in the breach and made up the biggest group, a second group who engaged in criminal trespass of the Capitol Building, and a third group\u2014the smallest in number\u2014who were responsible for carrying weapons into the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>Close to 500 arrests among those in the second and third groups have been made so far in connection with the Jan. 6 incident, Wray told the committee. The Department of Justice previously said that the majority of cases are related to entering a restricted building, obstruction of an official proceeding, and civil disorder.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI director also testified that the law enforcement agency considered the events that unfolded on Jan. 6 to be an act of \u201cdomestic terrorism.\u201d When asked by\u00a0Rep.
