Hundreds Injured by COVID Vaccines Turn to GoFundMe for Help With Expenses<\/h1>\n

People injured by COVID vaccines are asking for help on GoFundMe as the U.S. government shields vaccine makers from liability.<\/em><\/h3>\n

High school senior Emma Burkey<\/a> received the one-shot Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID vaccine April 1. Within two weeks she was placed in an induced coma. She underwent three brain surgeries after experiencing seizures and developing blood clots in her brain.<\/p>\n

When Burkey was well enough to be transferred from the hospital to a rehabilitation center, her first round of bills<\/a> totaled $513,000.<\/p>\n

Friends of the 18-year-old\u2019s family turned to GoFundMe<\/a> to raise money to help cover Burkey\u2019s mounting medical costs. As of July 7, more than $59,000 had been raised.<\/p>\n

The family hopes most of Burkey\u2019s medical costs will be covered by insurance \u2014 but that\u2019s unclear, as the cost of their daughter\u2019s medical care could run into millions of dollars.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now it feels like the national debt,\u201d a family spokesperson said. \u201cIt\u2019s so big you can\u2019t get your head around it.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to a recent update on Burkey\u2019s GoFundMe page, Burkey is still in intensive rehab, remains in a wheelchair and was able to stand unassisted for the first time July 6 \u2014 almost four months after she got the vaccine.<\/p>\n

More than 180 people seeking help on GoFundMe<\/strong><\/p>\n

As The Defender reported<\/a> July 1, research<\/a> compiled by a group in Mesa County, Colorado, showed as of June 25 there were more than 180 GoFundMe accounts seeking help for people who had suffered injuries after receiving a COVID vaccine and were left with large medical bills and other expenses.<\/p>\n
