{"id":74640,"date":"2021-07-19T21:23:01","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T01:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=74640"},"modified":"2021-07-19T21:23:01","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T01:23:01","slug":"bombshell-leak-exposes-global-abuse-of-cyber-spying-weapon-to-target-politicians-activists-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=74640","title":{"rendered":"BOMBSHELL! <b>Leak Exposes Global Abuse Of Cyber-Spying Weapon To Target Politicians, Activists, &#038; Journalists<\/b>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden\/status\/1416797153524174854?s=20\">Ed Snowden warned in a tweet\u00a0<\/a>when the story broke this weekend,<em><strong>\u00a0&#8220;this leak is going to be the story of the year.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2560_2.jpg?itok=LtSAIxE6\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2560_2.jpg?itok=LtSAIxE6\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2560_2.jpg?itok=LtSAIxE6\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"d4225e78-33e0-4dd9-94dd-83526b9c3e50\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/southfront.org\/israeli-software-companys-spyware-used-to-target-hundreds-of-journalists-activists\/\"><em>Southfront reports\u00a0<\/em><\/a>that\u00a0<strong>an Israeli company\u2019s spyware was used in attempted and successful hacks of 37 smartphones belonging to journalists, government officials and human rights activists around the world, according to an investigation by 17 media organizations, published on July 18th.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the organizations, The Washington Post, said the Pegasus spyware licensed by Israel-based NSO Group also was used to target phones belonging to two women close to Jamal Khashoggi, a Post columnist murdered at a Saudi consulate in Turkey in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>One of them was his fiancee, and she and the other woman were targeted both before and after his death.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian, another of the media outlets, said\u00a0<strong>the investigation suggested \u201cwidespread and continuing abuse\u201d of NSO\u2019s hacking software<\/strong>, described as malware that infects smartphones to enable the extraction of messages, photos and emails; record calls; and secretly activate microphones.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation highlights widespread and continuing abuse of NSO\u2019s hacking spyware called \u2018Pegasus\u2019 which the company confirms is only intended for use against terrorist groups, drug and human traffickers, and criminals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pegasus is a very advanced malware that infects iOS and Android devices to allow operators of the spyware to copy messages, photos, calls and other data, including secretly activate microphones and cameras.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Based on the investigation, the leak contains a list of 50,000 phone numbers that have been identified as those of people of interest by clients of NSO since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The list includes many close family members of one country\u2019s ruler, suggesting he might have instructed the country\u2019s intelligence agencies to explore the possibility of tracking and spying on their own relatives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/NSO-Pegasus-Spyware.jpg?itok=2qKyFH9j\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/NSO-Pegasus-Spyware.jpg?itok=2qKyFH9j\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/NSO-Pegasus-Spyware.jpg?itok=2qKyFH9j\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"3499479b-565a-4928-8a74-729b24d8943f\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The company, NSO Group, issued a statement on its website denying the reporting by the 17 media partners led by the Paris-based journalism nonprofit Forbidden Stories.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe report by Forbidden Stories is full of wrong assumptions and uncorroborated theories that raise serious doubts about the reliability and interests of the sources. It seems like the \u2018unidentified sources\u2019 have supplied information that has no factual basis and are far from reality,\u201d the company said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter checking their claims, we firmly deny the false allegations made in their report,\u201d the statement said.\u00a0<strong>NSO said its technology was not associated in any way with Khashoggi\u2019s murder.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a statement, rights group Amnesty International condemning \u201cthe wholesale lack of regulation\u201d of surveillance software.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cUntil this company (NSO) and the industry as a whole can show it is capable of respecting human rights, there must be an immediate moratorium on the export, sale, transfer and use of surveillance technology,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the rights group said in a statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The targeted phone numbers were on a list provided by Forbidden Stories and Amnesty International to the 17 media organizations. It was not clear how the groups obtained the list.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers on the list were not attributed, but reporters identified more than 1,000 people spanning more than 50 countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They included several Arab royal family members, at least 65 business executives, 85 human rights activists, 189 journalists and more than 600 politicians and government officials \u2013 including several heads of state and prime ministers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are deeply troubled to learn that two AP journalists, along with journalists from many news organizations, are among those who may have been targeted by Pegasus spyware,\u201d said Director of AP Media Relations Lauren Easton.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe have taken steps to ensure the security of our journalists\u2019 devices and are investigating,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0she added.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters\u2019 spokesman Dave Moran said, \u201cJournalists must be allowed to report the news in the public interest without fear of harassment or harm, wherever they are.
