The study examined one outbreak and found three-quarters of people testing positive were vaccinated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text \">\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised its masking guidelines on Tuesday, urging all Americans in areas with high Covid-19 transmission to mask up when indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Mask mandates in companies, government departments, and certain local jurisdictions followed, as CDC Director Rochelle Walensky insisted the decision was made on the back of fresh scientific evidence.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"read-more-big\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/530722-who-delta-variant-mortality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"read-more-big__container\"><span class=\"read-more-big__content\"><span class=\"read-more-big__subtitle\">ALSO ON RT.COM<\/span><span class=\"read-more-big__title\">\u2018Doesn\u2019t change our GAME PLAN\u2019: WHO says no evidence \u2018faster &amp; fitter\u2019 Delta variant has higher mortality or vax resistance<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>The CDC released that evidence on Friday. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7031e2.htm?s_cid=mm7031e2_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u00a0of 469 cases of Covid-19 that broke out in the resort town of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, earlier this month, 74% occurred in\u00a0<em>\u201cfully vaccinated persons.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Four out of five patients hospitalized were fully vaccinated, and on average the inoculated had completed their two rounds of doses only 86 days before infection.<\/p>\n<p>The cases studied occurred in people vaccinated primarily with Pfizer and Moderna shots, with a smaller number having received Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s one-dose jab. No one vaccine was singled out as providing better or worse protection, and none appeared to prevent symptoms from developing. Some 79% of vaccinated patients were symptomatic, the study noted.<\/p>\n<p>Lab testing revealed that 90% of all the Cape Cod infections involved the Delta variant of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>The report lends weight to the argument that the current crop of vaccines aren\u2019t as effective against the Delta variant, although the CDC and World Health Organization (WHO) both insist that vaccination is effective against\u00a0<em>\u201csevere disease and death\u201d<\/em>\u00a0from the virus, to quote WHO technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove in a briefing earlier on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>However, the CDC study noted that similarly high viral loads were found in vaccinated and unvaccinated people. Walensky\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2021\/s0730-mmwr-covid-19.html\">stated<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that\u00a0<em>\u201chigh viral loads suggest an increased risk of transmission\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and raised concern that\u00a0<em>\u201cvaccinated people infected with Delta can transmit the virus.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The study itself is less alarmist, stating that\u00a0<em>\u201cmicrobiological studies are required to confirm these findings.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Walensky said that the Cape Cod study was\u00a0<em>\u201cpivotal\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in informing the CDC\u2019s decision to recommend indoor masking. Previously, the agency drew flak from Republicans for using an extremely limited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/article\/rs-637724\/v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indian study<\/a>\u00a0on viral loads and potential transmission to back up the mask guidance, as was revealed by documents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/context\/cdc-breakthrough-infections\/94390e3a-5e45-44a5-ac40-2744e4e25f2e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leaked<\/a>\u00a0to the Washington Post on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The study appears to negate the argument by top health officials that unvaccinated Americans are responsible for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_dailytrendscases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fourfold rise<\/a>\u00a0in Covid-19 cases in the US since June.\u00a0<em>\u201cThis is an issue predominantly among the unvaccinated, which is the reason why we\u2019re out there, practically pleading with the unvaccinated people to go out and get vaccinated,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0White House coronavirus adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN on Sunday, adding that the US is currently moving\u00a0<em>\u201cin the wrong direction\u201d<\/em>\u00a0with regard to stamping out Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>Whether mask mandates will slow the spread of the Delta variant will be borne out with time. Beyond requiring masks and pressuring Americans to get vaccinated, the White House is running out of options.<\/p>\n<p>A national vaccine requirement is\u00a0<em>\u201cnot under consideration at this time,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Friday.
