{"id":78478,"date":"2021-08-10T11:34:25","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T15:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=78478"},"modified":"2021-08-10T11:34:25","modified_gmt":"2021-08-10T15:34:25","slug":"companies-now-illegally-taking-up-to-50-00-out-of-paychecks-of-unvaccinated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=78478","title":{"rendered":"Companies Now illegally Taking Up to $50.00 Out of Paychecks of Unvaccinated"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Companies Now Deducting $50 From Unvaccinated Workers&#8217; Monthly Paychecks: Consultancy Firm<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->By Jack Phillips<br \/>\nThe Epoch Times<\/p>\n<p>Some employers are starting to\u00a0<strong>tack on a $20 to $50 monthly surcharge to their unvaccinated workers<\/strong>, according to a health benefits consultant group.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEmployers have tried encouraging employees to get vaccinated through offering incentives like paid time off and cash, but with the Delta variant driving up infections and hospitalizations throughout the country &#8211; at the same time that vaccination rates have stalled &#8211; we have received inquiries from at least 20 employers over the past few weeks who are giving consideration to\u00a0<strong>adding health coverage surcharges for the unvaccinated as a way to drive up vaccination rates in their workforce<\/strong>,\u201d Wade Symons, with consultancy group Mercer, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brucejapsen\/2021\/08\/08\/coming-soon-for-the-unvaccinated-a-50-monthly-paycheck-deduction-from-your-employer\/?sh=1cd50ea147ae\">Forbes magazine<\/a>\u00a0on Aug. 8.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Symons didn\u2019t disclose the names of the firms<\/strong>\u00a0that are working to add surcharges to workers who haven\u2019t received\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-covid-19\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0vaccines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Vacc-Archive-4_JF_Orange_12162020-700x420%20%281%29.jpg?itok=R0yc4S2h\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Vacc-Archive-4_JF_Orange_12162020-700x420%20%281%29.jpg?itok=R0yc4S2h\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/Vacc-Archive-4_JF_Orange_12162020-700x420%20%281%29.jpg?itok=R0yc4S2h\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"58149d8b-3fa0-47b8-8cd8-99fc35616526\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several large companies, including Google, Facebook, and Walmart, as well as hospital systems and others, have mandated that their employees get vaccinated. And on Aug. 9, the Department of Defense stated that all military members will have to get the vaccine, coming more than a week after President Joe Biden announced that federal employees would have to either get the vaccine or be subject to routine testing.<\/p>\n<p>Symons separately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.us\/our-thinking\/healthcare\/thinking-about-a-premium-surcharge-for-the-unvaccinated.html\">wrote in a column<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<strong>some employers have held off on vaccine mandates \u201cbecause of potential employee relations issues that such a move might provoke,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0but he added that with the Delta COVID-19 variant and a stall in vaccinations, \u201chealth coverage surcharges for the unvaccinated are a tactic employers are reviewing as an alternative to a mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe rationale for adding a surcharge to health insurance contributions for unvaccinated employees is seen as similar to that for a tobacco-use surcharge,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf an employee is unvaccinated and contracts a COVID-19 infection, that creates higher claims costs, which can impact the employer\u2019s bottom line, and mean higher future contributions for other employees. Beyond plan costs, there are the public health benefits of greater vaccination rates, in addition to workplace safety considerations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And any vaccine-related surcharge, Symons noted, would have to be compliant with the landmark 1996\u00a0Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, law.<\/p>\n<p>Other than mandates from employers, some cities are considering requiring patrons at certain establishments to provide proof of vaccination via a so-called vaccine passport system.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, said recently that theaters, gyms, bars, and restaurants will have to ask customers for proof of vaccination starting in mid-August, although enforcement isn\u2019t clear. Los Angeles City Council members announced they are considering a similar passport-like measure.<\/p>\n<p>After France announced it would use a vaccine passport system, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets for several consecutive weekends to rally against the government\u2019s mandate.
