Michael Byrd said he shot\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-ashli-babbitt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashli Babbitt<\/a>\u00a0as she tried to climb through a broken window into the Speaker\u2019s Lobby, adjacent to the House chamber, because he feared she and others inside the building would get into the chamber, where Congress members were hiding after the Capitol was breached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>She was posing a threat to the United States House of Representatives<\/strong>,\u201d Byrd said on NBC.<\/p>\n<p>Byrd admitted he did not know Babbitt was unarmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I could not fully see her hands or what was in the backpack or what the intentions are<\/strong>,\u201d Byrd said. \u201cBut they had shown violence leading up to that point,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>That statement upset Aaron Babbitt, the husband of Ashli Babbitt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>My agitation level is actually going through the roof right now.<\/strong>\u00a0He admitted he didn\u2019t really care if she was armed or unarmed or not,\u201d Aaron Babbitt said on Fox News after Byrd\u2019s interview aired.<\/p>\n<p>Video footage showed a number of officers inside the room that sits outside the Speaker\u2019s Lobby, as well as others inside the lobby with Byrd. Terrell Roberts, who is representing the Babbitt family, has told The Epoch Times that the killing was \u201ca pretty clear case of shooting an unarmed person without any legal justification.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-1\" class=\"Advert_centered__2tRj9 Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_1_1__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Byrd was cleared earlier this year by both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/no-charges-against-officer-who-shot-ashli-babbitt-doj_3776023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Department of Justice<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/capitol-police-officer-who-killed-ashli-babbitt-on-jan-6-insurrection-acted-lawfully-police_3961352.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the agency he works for<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/ashli-babbitt-11-1200x823.jpg?itok=OxzzTGyC\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"343\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"694f592d-e7ae-4ed1-ad24-79996c65c430\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><figcaption><em>An undated social media selfie photograph shows Ashley Babbitt, also spelled Ashli. (Ashli Babbitt\/Twitter)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Federal authorities decided not to pursue charges against Byrd because they determined, following an investigation, that there was \u201cinsufficient evidence\u201d to support a prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>The Capitol Police said the officer \u201cpotentially saved Members and staff from serious injury and possible death from a large crowd of rioters who forced their way into the U.S. Capitol and to the House Chamber, where Members and staff were steps away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Byrd said he does not regret what he did.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-2\" class=\"Advert_centered__2tRj9 Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_2_1__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I know that day I saved countless lives,<\/strong>\u201d Byrd said on Thursday. \u201c<strong>I know members of Congress, as well as my fellow officers and staff, were in jeopardy and in serious danger. And that\u2019s my job<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Byrd\u2019s identity had been shielded by the Capitol Police, which said it was not publicizing his name because of safety concerns. Byrd\u2019s lawyer had said his client was receiving death threats.<\/p>\n<p>Babbitt\u2019s family\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/ashli-babbitts-family-sues-to-learn-identity-of-officer-who-shot-her_3845674.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had sued<\/a>\u00a0to learn his identity and plans to file a lawsuit charging that Byrd violated Babbitt\u2019s constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<p>Byrd\u2019s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment when asked why the officer chose to reveal his own identity.<\/p>\n<p>Byrd said the threats include people saying they will kill him.
