{"id":81701,"date":"2021-08-31T12:00:03","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T16:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=81701"},"modified":"2021-08-31T12:00:03","modified_gmt":"2021-08-31T16:00:03","slug":"here-comes-the-next-covid-scariant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=81701","title":{"rendered":"Here comes the next Covid Scariant!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Scientists Warn About New Hyper-Infectious South African Variant<\/h1>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>Scientists in South Africa have identified a new variant that<strong>\u00a0&#8220;has all of the signatures of immune escape&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0and very well could be the source of the next variant-driven wave of COVID cases around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The variant, known a C.1.2 &#8211; it isn&#8217;t important enough yet to deserve a Greek-letter shorthand &#8211; was first identified in May in the provinces of Mpumalanga and Gauteng, where Johannesburg and SA&#8217;s capital, Pretoria, are located. As of Aug. 13,\u00a0<strong>the variant has been found in six of South Africa\u2019s nine provinces as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Portugal and Switzerland.\u00a0<\/strong>Even New Zealand has reported a case of the variant in its most recent outbreak, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-30\/new-covid-variant-found-in-south-africa-has-concerning-mutations?sref=i4qXzk6d\">Bloomberg.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/SACOVID.jpg?itok=ejOACcon\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/SACOVID.jpg?itok=ejOACcon\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/SACOVID.jpg?itok=ejOACcon\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"324\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"2c3be91d-1e9c-494c-ba24-0079e4bbd370\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_placement__1I4yb Advert_align__N0_fw\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-video\" class=\"Advert_verticallySpaced__wnPy3\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772,21778456762\/zerohedge\/in_content_video_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>The most concerning thing about the new variant is that\u00a0<strong>it possesses certain traits that might be &#8220;associated with increased transmissibility\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>and an increased ability to evade antibodies, the scientists said. \u201cIt is important to highlight this lineage given its concerning constellation of mutations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>C.1.2. evolved from C.1., a lineage of the virus that dominated infections in the first wave of the virus in South Africa in mid-2020. It has between 44 and 59 mutations from the original virus detected in Wuhan in China, which is a surprisingly large number indicating advanced mutation.<\/p>\n<p>The latest preprint research cited by Bloomberg was published by a team of South African groups including KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform, known as Krisp, and the National Institute of Communicable Disease. In May,\u00a0<strong>the C.1.2 variant accounted for 0.2% of the genomes sequenced in South Africa. That number rose to 1.6% in June and 2% in July.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;We are currently assessing the impact of this variant on antibody neutralization&#8221; in both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals,<\/strong>\u00a0the scientists said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;It has only been detected in around 100 genomes, a very low number,&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>he said. &#8220;It\u2019s still a very small percentage, but again we are really keeping a good eye on that.\u00a0<strong>It has all of the signatures of immune escape.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The results are expected within a week, Tulio de Oliveira, the director of Krisp, said at an immunology conference on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>South African has already produced one major variant &#8211; the &#8216;beta&#8217; variant &#8211; which spread widely in Europe, the UK, Asia and the US, though it has since been dwarfed by the spread of delta.<\/p>\n<p>How much longer until Dr. Fauci joins in on the fear mongering?
