Pinal County will form civilian posse to help deputies with ‘suppressing lawlessness’<\/h1>\n

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office will form a civilian posse\u00a0to assist deputies with law enforcement, officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Citing the sprawling size of Pinal County, the sheriff’s office said the posse program would help law enforcement be available sooner during emergencies or times of “widespread unrest.”<\/p>\n

Deputies “may need assistance suppressing lawlessness and defending the county,” spokeswoman Lauren Reimer said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The move to reinforce the ranks of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office comes\u00a0during a time when\u00a0protests against police have swept through cities in Arizona and drawn increased scrutiny toward police shootings and use of\u00a0deadly\u00a0force.<\/p>\n

While the announcement didn’t mention the protests, Lamb\u00a0did allude to the need for increased law enforcement.<\/p>\n

“2020 has been quite the year,”\u00a0he said in a\u00a0YouTube video<\/a>\u00a0announcing the posse. “While we never know what the future will hold, we want to be prepared.”<\/p>\n

Posse members will need to complete\u00a0a four-hour training session that the sheriff’s office said will teach the principles of constitutional law,\u00a0search and seizure,\u00a0the use of deadly force\u00a0and other police tactics. Applicants will have to pass a “minimal” background check and will receive a certificate and ID.<\/p>\n

“Should you ever need to protect your family, home\u00a0or community, you’ll have some of the skills and knowledge you need,” Lamb said.<\/p>\n
