More Than Half Of Hospitalized Patients Tested COVID-19 Positive Only After Being Admitted \u2013 Leaked NHS Data<\/h1>\n

According to leaked NHS data more than half of those hospitalized with Covid-19 in the UK only tested positive after admission to the hospital.<\/h3>\n

Over half of those hospitalized with Covid-19 in the UK\u00a0only tested positive\u00a0<\/strong>after<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0admission<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 suggesting that \u201cvast numbers are being classed as hospitalised by Covid\u00a0when they were admitted with other ailments,\u00a0with the virus picked up by routine testing<\/strong>,\u201d according to\u00a0The Telegraph<\/a><\/em>, citing leaked government figures.<\/p>\n

What this may mean is that statistics published daily\u00a0may far overstate Covid hospitalizations<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 and consequently, pressures on the National Health Service (NHS).<\/p>\n

The leaked data \u2013 covering all NHS trusts in England \u2013 show that, as of last Thursday, just 44 per cent of patients classed as being hospitalised with Covid had tested positive by the time they were admitted.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The majority of cases were not detected until patients underwent standard Covid tests, carried out on everyone admitted to hospital for any reason.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Overall,\u00a056 per cent of Covid hospitalisations fell into this category<\/strong>, the data, seen by The Telegraph, show.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Crucially, this group does not distinguish between those admitted because of severe illness, later found to be\u00a0caused by the virus, and\u00a0those in hospital for different reasons who might otherwise never have known that they had picked it up<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

In June, UK health officials instructed NHS trusts to provide \u201ca breakdown of the current stock of Covid patients\u201d between those who were hospitalized primarily for Covid and those admitted for other reasons. Thus far, the NHS has failed to publish this now-leaked information.<\/p>\n

Out of more than 780 hospitalizations dated last Thursday,\u00a044%<\/strong>\u00a0tested positive within 14 days prior to admission, while\u00a043%\u00a0<\/strong>tested positive within two days of admission, and\u00a013%\u00a0<\/strong>tested positive \u2018in the days and weeks that followed\u2019 \u2013 including\u00a0those likely to have caught the virus in the hospital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cExperts said\u00a0<\/em>the high number of cases being detected belatedly \u2013 at a time when PCR tests were widely available \u2013 suggested many such patients had been admitted for other reasons<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d according to the report.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis data is incredibly important, and it should be published on an ongoing basis,\u201d said Prof Carl Heneghan, director of the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people hear about hospitalizations with Covid, they will assume that Covid is the likely cause, but this data shows something quite different \u2013 this is about Covid being detected after tests were looking for it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Heneghan has urged UK officials to be more transparent with this data \u2013 including whether or not the virus was the primary cause of hospital admission.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis needs to be fixed as a matter of urgency,\u201d he said, adding that\u00a0the currently published data could lead the public \u201ctowards false conclusions,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>which exaggerate the true level of pressure on the UK medical system.<\/p>\n

\u201cNearly 18 months into the Covid crisis, it is absurd that data breaking down hospital admissions still isn\u2019t publicly available on a regular basis,\u201d said Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee of Tory MPs.<\/p>\n

\u201cCounting all patients who test positive as Covid hospitalisations is inevitably misleading and gives a false picture of the continuing health impact of the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg Clark, the chairman of Commons science and technology select committee, on Monday night said he would write to Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, asking him to publish the breakdown on a regular basis following The Telegraph\u2019s disclosure.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
