{"id":88162,"date":"2021-10-06T11:34:18","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T15:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=88162"},"modified":"2021-10-06T11:37:22","modified_gmt":"2021-10-06T15:37:22","slug":"merck-charging-us-40-times-what-it-costs-to-make-govt-financed-covid-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/?p=88162","title":{"rendered":"Merck Charging US 40 Times What It Costs To Make Govt-Financed COVID Pill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>Merck&#8217;s new &#8216;not Ivermectin&#8217; Covid-19 treatment, molnupiravir, costs\u00a0<strong>$17.74 to produce<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; yet the company is charging the US government\u00a0<strong>$712 for the treatment<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>&#8211; a 40x markup<\/strong>, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/10\/05\/covid-pill-drug-pricing-merck-ridgeback\/\"><em>The Intercept<\/em><\/a>, citing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/melissabarber\/files\/estimated_cost-based_generic_prices_for_molnupiravir_for_the_treatment_of_covid-19_infection.pdf\">report<\/a>\u00a0issued last week by the Harvard School of Public Health and King\u2019s College Hospital in London.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/merck1a.JPG?itok=Bjah-sf4\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"af289645-ee4e-4e79-a01f-270f0ecff375\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><figcaption><em>Molnupiravir pill from Merck. Photo: Merck Sharp &amp; Dohme Corp.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The pill,\u00a0<strong>originally developed using US government funds as a possible treatment for Venezuelan equine encephalitis<\/strong>, cut the risk of hospitalization and death in half in a randomized trial of 775 adults with mild\/moderate Covid who were considered at high risk for disease due to comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. The trial was stopped early so the company could apply for and emergency use authorization (EUA). The drug did not benefit patients who were already hospitalized with severe disease.<\/p>\n<p>News of the oral &#8216;wonder drug&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/it-really-good-wall-street-reacts-mercks-big-deal-drug\">sent shares of Merck higher<\/a>\u00a0last week, as the company says it can deliver 10MM doses by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, the pill could bring in massive profits to Merck and its partner on the drug, Ridgeback Biotherapeutics &#8211;\u00a0<strong>which licensed the drug from Emory University in 2020\u00a0<\/strong>and then sold the worldwide rights to the drug to Merck for a sum which has not been disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a division of the Department of Defense, funded development of the drug by Emory University to the tune of $10 million between 2013 and 2015, according to nonprofit group Knowledge Ecology International\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keionline.org\/36648\">discovered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X3NwYWNlX2NhcmQiOnsiYnVja2V0Ijoib2ZmIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6bnVsbH19&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1444015735748104200&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zerohedge.com%2Fcovid-19%2Fmerck-charging-us-40-times-what-it-costs-make-govt-financed-covid-pill&amp;sessionId=9f2f2b459351d9810a436cd12476cc1500f8e316&amp;siteScreenName=zerohedge&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=fcb1942%3A1632982954711&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1444015735748104200\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Yet,\u00a0<strong>as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2068247\/merck-could-make-up-to-7-billion-from-its-covid-19-drugs-in-2021\/\"><em>Quartz<\/em><\/a>\u00a0points out, only Merck and Ridgeback will profit from the new antiviral<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; which they say &#8220;could be one of the most lucrative drugs ever,&#8221; bringing in as much as\u00a0<strong>$7 billion by the end of this year alone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Despite its initial investment, the U.S. government seems to be facing a steep markup in prices. In June, the government signed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keionline.org\/36698\">$1.2 billion contract<\/a>\u00a0with Merck to supply\u00a0<strong>1.7 million courses of the medication at the $712 price<\/strong>. The transaction is due to take place as soon as molnupiravir receives emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Good government advocates are pointing out that because federal agencies spent at least $29 million on the drug\u2019s development, the government has the obligation to ensure that the medicine is affordable. \u201cThe public funded this drug, and therefore the public has some rights, including the rights you have it available under reasonable terms,\u201d said Luis Gil Abinader, senior researcher at Knowledge Ecology International. -The Intercept<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Pushing back<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ridgeback co-founder Wendy Holman told\u00a0<em>CNBC<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/66zoen3itw1z5m7\/CNBC%20-%20Ridgeback%20Interview.mp4?dl=0\">in an interview<\/a>\u00a0last week that they asked for, but &#8220;never got government funding&#8221; for the manufacture of molnupiravir. The company also claimed in a press release touting the study that &#8220;since licensed by Ridgeback, all funds used for the development of molnupiravir have been provided by Merck and by Wayne and Wendy Holman of Ridgeback.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Critics, meanwhile,\u00a0<\/strong>say the $700+ price point is absurd &#8211; with health advocates concerned that people some countries will not be able to afford the new drug.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Offering someone a $700 treatment when they don\u2019t yet feel that ill is going to mean that a lot of people are not going to take it,&#8221; said King&#8217;s College Hospital physician Dzintars Gotham, co-author of the report &#8211; which suggests that Merck would still reap a 10% profit margin if they priced molnupiravir at $19.99.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you can\u2019t afford medicine because it\u2019s 1,000 times more than you can afford, or because it\u2019s 100 times more than you can afford, it doesn\u2019t matter,&#8221; said Melissa Barber, a doctoral candidate at the Harvard School of Public Health and co-author of the report on molnupiravir, adding &#8220;those are both bad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Barber and Gotham acknowledge that the $17.74 cost of producing a five-day course of the antiviral pills is an estimate but said that the algorithm they used, and have employed to estimate the production costs for hundreds of drugs, tends to result in overestimates in the long run.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Meanwhile, the prices that private companies charge for drugs tend to go up rather than down. \u201cFor all these deals that have happened for therapeutics or vaccines, the price has only increased as uncertainty has decreased,\u201d she said. \u201cOne price is given and then, for the next sale, the price goes up. The price went up for other drugs and vaccines, so I would be very surprised if this price didn\u2019t go up, too.\u201d -The Intercept<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If only there were another option<\/strong>\u00a0for mild-moderate Covid-19 cases that was inexpensive and used around the world for decades with an extremely positive drug safety profile.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re just going to leave this here (as we noted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/covid-19\/never-say-neigh-fda-lists-horse-drug-approved-covid-treatment\">last month<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>Widely prescribed anti-parasitic Ivermectin (also made by Merck) has shown\u00a0<strong>massive efficacy worldwide<\/strong>\u00a0in the treatment of mild and moderate cases of Covid-19, plus as a prophylactic.
