Dozens of people have been killed in a mosque explosion in Afghanistan<\/h1>\n

A suicide bomb explosion ripped through a Shiite mosque in northern Afghanistan’s Kunduz province, killing at least or wounding dozens of worshippers, according to a local official.<\/p>\n

Afghanistan’s\u00a0TOLO news agency<\/a>\u00a0quotes the director of information and culture of Kunduz as saying at least 43 people are dead and more than 140 hurt in the suicide attack.<\/p>\n

Dost Mohammad Obaida, a police official in the province, confirmed that “more than 100” were dead or wounded, according to The Associated Press.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the mosque was specifically targeted,\u00a0tweeting<\/a>\u00a0that “a number of our compatriots were martyred and wounded.”<\/p>\n

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan later\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0that it was “deeply concerned” about the reports.<\/p>\n

“Today’s incident is part of a disturbing pattern of violence: 3rd deadly attack this week apparently targeting a religious institution,” UNAMA said.<\/p>\n

Witnesses said they were praying when they heard the explosion, according to the AP.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.<\/p>\n

Shiite Muslims have long been a target of violence by extremists in predominately Sunni Afghanistan. The Taliban, which regained control of the country after two decades out of power, have specifically targeted the minority group in the past.<\/p>\n
