Google and Amazon will transfer Israel\u2019s data into six cloud-based storage centers over the next several years.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>The open letter says the deal violates the signers\u2019 \u201ccore values\u201d by allegedly fostering surveillance of Palestinians and\u00a0encouraging the expansion of Jewish settlements.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>\u201cFor me as a Jewish employee of Google, I feel a deep sense of intense moral responsibility,\u201d said Ariel Koren, who lives in San Francisco and works in Google\u2019s education division. \u201cWhen you work in a company, you have the right to be accountable and responsible for the way that your labor is actually being used.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>Koren, along with Gabriel Schubiner, a New York\u2013based Google software engineer, helped devise the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/oct\/12\/google-amazon-workers-condemn-project-nimbus-israeli-military-contract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open letter calling for the two mammoth companies to end the Project Nimbus contract.<\/a>\u00a0It appeared in the opinion section of the UK\u2019s Guardian news site Oct. 12, claiming it had been signed by 390 Google and Amazon employees.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"FILE PHOTO: A Google sign is shown at one of the company's office complexes in Irvine, California, U.S., July 27, 2020. (credit: MIKE BLAKE\/ REUTERS)<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>\u201cAs workers who keep these companies running, we are morally obligated to speak out against violations of these core values,\u201d the statement read. \u201cThis technology allows for further surveillance of and unlawful data collection on Palestinians, and facilitates expansion of Israel\u2019s illegal settlements on Palestinian land.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>According to Koren, over 1,000 employees have now signed the petition, although they remain anonymous and J. is unable to verify the number of supporters. Koren and Schubiner are two of only three total signatories who have chosen to identify themselves publicly.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>The pair of Jewish Googlers said their identity as Jews is essential to speaking out on behalf of Palestinian colleagues who fear retribution.<\/div>\n<div class=\"hide-for-premium\">\n<div class=\"ob-smartfeed-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"outbrain_widget_0\" class=\"OUTBRAIN\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/\/diaspora\/jewish-employees-push-to-cancel-googles-12b-contract-with-israel-683581\" data-widget-id=\"AR_37\" data-ob-mark=\"true\" data-browser=\"chrome\" data-os=\"macintel\" data-dynload=\"\" data-idx=\"0\">\n<div class=\"ob-widget ob-feed-layout AR_37\">\n<div class=\"ob-widget-footer\">\n<div class=\"ob_what ob_what_resp\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u201cAs Jews, we\u2019re relatively more insulated against charges of antisemitism that often come up in these discussions,\u201d said Schubiner. \u201cI do recognize the privilege that comes with my identity and talking about this issue without fear of retaliation.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>The push to end the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/jpost-tech\/google-and-amazon-win-israels-nis-4b-nimbus-cloud-tender-665868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Nimbus<\/a>\u00a0contract faces an uphill battle. The contract reportedly contains a safeguard\u00a0preventing the tech giants from pulling out due to boycott pressure. In a short statement to J., Amazon Web Services said the company is \u201cfocused on making the benefits of our world-leading cloud technology available to all our customers, wherever they are located.\u201d Google did not reply to a request for comment.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>Koren and Schubiner pointed to previous instances when Google responded to employees\u2019 pressure<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/01\/technology\/google-pentagon-project-maven.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">, ending the renewal of a contract with the Pentagon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2019\/07\/17\/google-has-terminated-project-dragonfly-its-censored-chinese-search-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discontinuing work on a censored Chinese search engine.<\/a>\u00a0Schubiner added that if the contract with the Israeli government holds, he hopes the open letter will push Google and Amazon toward more transparency in their business contracts and the adoption of ethical standards for future data storage projects.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>Koren and Schubiner told J. they have been working to convince Jewish tech employees who are not currently active in criticizing Israel to take a stance on the contract. \u201cTrying to have these kinds of conversations, while also listening and being respectful with coworkers, is difficult,\u201d said Schubiner. \u201cIt\u2019s not an easy conversation. One that, frankly, Google has tried to avoid and tried to shut down because they think it is so difficult.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>Public support for the appeal has been largely confined to hardline anti-Zionist critics of Israel, including Jewish Voice for Peace and American Muslims for Palestine. These groups back a complete boycott of the state. Both Koren and Schubiner declined to comment when asked if they want Google and Amazon to divest from Israel outside of Project Nimbus.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>The two are also members of Jewish Diaspora in Tech, a coalition of left-wing Jews who say they have felt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/18\/22441236\/jewish-google-employees-support-palestine-letter-anti-zionism-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ostracized<\/a>\u00a0from Jewish tech spaces due to their highly critical positions on Israel and Zionism. Schubiner said the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 forced him to reassess the division between his personal life and his work at Google.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI was kind of shocked to find that the conversations about equity that we tried to have in that [Jewish Google] space were very quickly derailed into conversations that used antisemitism as a means to avoid talking about other types of racial equity,\u201d Schubiner said. Now he says around 200 people have joined the internal Google group for Jewish Diaspora in Tech.<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI don\u2019t know if the demand to drop Nimbus is fully achievable,\u201d added Schubiner. \u201cIt\u2019s up to the workers to decide that this is an issue that we care about enough to really put our own skin in the game.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<div><em>This article was originally published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jweekly.com\/2021\/10\/22\/jewish-googlers-play-key-role-in-push-to-cancel-1-2-billion-israeli-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J.
