President Trump tore into Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., in harsh terms on Tuesday, taking a moment from his overseas tour in London to call the House Intelligence Committee chairman\u00a0a \u201cmaniac\u201d and a \u201cderanged human being\u201d over his handling of\u00a0the impeachment inquiry<\/a>.<\/p>\n Trump was speaking to reporters alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of a NATO summit, when he was asked what he would hope to learn from having Schiff testify in a possible Senate impeachment trial — a scenario some Republicans would like to see.<\/p>\n \u201cI learn nothing from Adam Schiff, I think he\u2019s a maniac,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI think Adam Schiff is a deranged human being. I think he grew up with a complex for lots of reasons that are obvious.\u00a0I think he\u2019s a very sick man, and he lies.\u201d<\/p>\n The comments\u00a0demonstrated how the impeachment fight has followed Trump even as he meets with world leaders in London on issues ranging from defense spending to ISIS.\u00a0Trump focused Tuesday\u00a0on a controversial\u00a0move by Schiff in September<\/a>, where he read out a hyperbolic account of Trump\u2019s controversial July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n \u201cI have a favor I want from you,\u201d Schiff said in a hearing while appearing to read from a piece of paper. \u201cAnd I\u2019m going to say this only seven times, so you better listen good. I want you to make up dirt on my political opponent, understand? Lots of it, on this and on that.\u201d<\/p>\n Schiff later chalked up his fictional summary of the phone call to a joke as he came under fire from conservatives for making up quotes.<\/p>\n \u201cMy summary of the president\u2019s call was meant to be at least, part, in parody,” Schiff said. “The fact that that\u2019s not clear is a separate problem in and of itself. Of course, the president never said, \u2018If you don\u2019t understand me I\u2019m going to say it seven more times.’ My point is, that\u2019s the message that the Ukraine president was receiving in not so many words.”<\/p>\n Trump has repeatedly criticized Schiff for the move.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"http:\/\/stateofthenation.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/694940094001_6111164560001_6111172357001-vs-1024x576.jpg\")
