Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announces new collaboration between autonomous vehicle tech company Mobileye, state of Michigan on third full day of mission to Israel

Agreement establishes pilot program focused on advanced driving technology

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer continued to advance Michigan’s leadership in bringing together public and private partners to advance the state’s mobility ecosystem today, joining executives from Intel-owned Mobileye, a global leader in collision avoidance and autonomous vehicle technology and state officials to announce a new agreement between the state of Michigan and Mobileye.

The agreement creates a pilot program for Mobileye’s retrofit technology that will include the following organizations: Michigan Department of Transportation, Michigan Economic Development Corporation/PlanetM, and is expected to be rolled out to several Michigan counties, transit and police agencies as well. Set to run for six months to take advantage of Michigan’s winter road conditions, the pilot would feature installing Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) equipment in up to 100 fleet vehicles to demonstrate reduction in collisions and help collect data that could be useful to enhance safety and efficiency for Michigan’s fleets.

“This program will demonstrate the potential of driving assistance technology to save lives, reduce collision-related costs, and help diminish traffic congestion,” said Governor Whitmer. “Our work with Mobileye highlights the number of contributions Michigan brings to the world of mobility and will help us advance technology and improve the quality of life for countless people. I’m proud to collaborate with Mobileye and eager to continue our work to transform the automotive landscape and solidify Michigan as a world leader in mobility.”

While the pilot is initially set for six months, part of the meetings with Mobileye in Israel center around additional avenues to work more closely together on issues around transportation and mobility technology.

Whitmer also met with Dr. Ami Appelbaum, chairman of the board of the Israel Innovation Authority and chief scientist at the Ministry of Economics and Industry, to discuss the shared tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship between Israel and Michigan.

In June, PlanetM, the mobility initiative of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, announced a partnership with Michigan Israel Business Accelerator and the Israel Innovation Authority, to launch the official rollout of the Israel Michigan Autonomous Technologies Collaboration (IMATC) – a program aimed at providing Israeli companies grant funding and access to Michigan’s resources across a variety of industries for real-world deployment of innovative, future-mobility solutions. The announcement was made during Ecomotion in Tel Aviv, and today’s meeting with the Israel Innovation Authority builds on that relationship with the state.

The governor’s trip is hosted by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit in coordination with the MEDC and the Michigan Israel Business Accelerator.
