Ramaswamy’s deep connection to Shabtai, the Jewish alternative to “secret societies” at Yale

Ramaswamy told JNS that he was one of the “key people” in Shabtai, the Jewish alternative to “secret societies,” at Yale University, where he studied law. He said he was a personal mentor to the company’s co-founder and rabbinic advisor, Rabbi Shmully Hecht.

Founded in 1996 at Yale, Shabtai receives significant financial backing from Israeli-American tech mogul Benny Shabtai, who is a major supporter of Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. Although the society was founded on Jewish values, the membership is diverse. Among its alumni is Democratic New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, who himself ran for president in 2020.

Ramaswamy describes his time with Shabtai as defining, and the group promoted him as an alumni. Rabbi Hecht, who belongs to the Chabad movement, has not yet responded to the newspaper’s inquiry.
