64 COVID Vaccines Are in the Works: Do You Know How They Work?

Manufacturers have dozens of COVID-19 vaccines in the pipeline — 64 so far — and they’re in a race to get them on the market at warp speed. But how can they do that safely and effectively when we’re only a year into the pandemic and, ordinarily, it takes years to develop vaccine?
Drug makers keep issuing statements saying they believe they can do it. Meanwhile, The New York Times has a feature article on how eight of the vaccines are designed to work. From an mRNA vaccine that uses spike proteins from the virus to one that has virus DNA inside an adenovirus, to one that has inactivated coronaviruses grown in monkey kidney cells in it, and more, the list has a dizzying array of novel processes, 20 of which have reached final testing.
But that’s not all: Drug makers say they have 85 more vaccines in preclinical trials.
