President Joe Biden holds a job approval rating of 59% in the latest poll from Pew Research Center released this week, with almost three quarters of Americans saying he’s done a good or excellent job of handling the COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

Biden’s approval rating approaching the 100-day mark far exceeds former President Donald Trump’s at the same point in April of his first term, as well as former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush. Of the past seven presidents, only Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan had higher approval ratings in April of their first terms.

  • Biden: 59%.
  • Trump: 39%.
  • Obama: 61%.
  • G.W. Bush: 55%.
  • Clinton: 49%.
  • H.W. Bush: 58%.
  • Reagan: 67%.

Pew also found that almost half of Americans like how Biden conducts himself as president, 46%, compared to about one-quarter who don’t, at 27%.

”As Biden approaches the 100-day mark of his presidency, relatively few Americans express negative views of the way he conducts himself as president,” reads the survey report. ”However, fewer than half say they agree with him on all, nearly all, or many of the important issues facing the country.”

Biden also received high marks for his administration’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout, far above the response given to a retroactive question about the Trump administration.

  • 29% said Biden is doing an excellent job managing vaccine distribution.
  • 43% said Biden is doing a good job.
  • 12% said Biden is doing a fair job.
  • 7% said Biden is doing a poor job.
  • 19% said Trump did an excellent job managing vaccine distribution.
  • 24% said Trump did a good job.
  • 23% said Trump did a fair job.
  • 33% said Trump did a poor job.

Pew notes that although Democrats and independents both rate Biden much higher than Republicans, more than half of the GOP rated Biden positively when it comes to vaccine rollout.

”In their retrospective views of the Trump administration’s handling of the vaccines, both Republicans and Democrats offer more positive evaluations for how the administration supported the development of vaccines than for how it managed their manufacture and distribution,” the survey report notes.

Pew polled 5,109 adults among its American Trends Panel, which is designed to represent the nation, from April 5-11 with a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points.
