Something about the fire has bothered me from the first news story. Maui is an island. Why didn’t people run into the sea to escape the flames…? It makes no sense that they got stuck in traffic jams on the one road out of town and were incinerated in their cars. Lahaina is/was a coastal town, right on the water. As a NZer living in an island nation, I would run/drive to the nearby ocean to escape a rapid fire. Driving inland away from the sea is for tsunamis.
