The limited literature on in vitro toxicity suggests that GFNs can be either benign or toxic to cells, and it is hypothesised that the biological response will vary across the material family depending on layer number, lateral size, stiffness, hydrophobicity, surface functionalisation, and dose. Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in target cells is a potential mechanism for toxicity, although the extremely high hydrophobic surface area of some GFNs may also lead to significant interactions with membrane lipids leading to direct physical toxicity or adsorption of biological molecules leading to indirect toxicity. Limited in vivo studies demonstrate systemic biodistribution and biopersistence of GFNs following intravenous delivery. Similar to other smooth, continuous, biopersistent implants or foreign bodies, GFNs have the potential to induce foreign body tumours. Long-term adverse health impacts must be considered in the design of GFNs for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and fluorescence-based biomolecular sensing.

Since 2004, when researchers discovered how to extract it from Graphite, graphene has opened new windows of opportunity in the world of science and technology. Now, for the first time, a team of researchers, two of whom are supported by the EU-funded project EUCALL, have proved that Graphene is actually able to convert electronic signals into signals in the Terahertz range, with trillions of cycles per second. The team’s findings are presented in a study published in the journal ‘Nature’. The Silicon-based electronic components used today generate clock speeds in the GHz range, where 1 GHz is equal to 1 000 million cycles per second. The scientists demonstrated that Graphene can convert signals with these frequencies into signals with frequencies that are thousands of times higher than those created by Silicon. What makes this feat possible is the highly efficient non-linear interaction between Light and Matter that occurs in Graphene. The researchers used Graphene containing a large number of free electrons that originated from the interaction between Graphene and the substrate onto which it was deposited. When these electrons become excited by an oscillating electric field in room-temperature conditions, they rapidly share their Energy with bound electrons in the material. The electrons therefore reacted like a heated fluid, changing from liquid to vapour form inside the Graphene within trillionths of a second. This transition led to powerful, rapid changes in the material’s conductivity, multiplying the frequency of the original GHz pulses. Extracts: Graphene Oxide Nanoparticles (GONPs) have attracted a lot of attention due to their many applications. These applications include batteries, super capacitors, drug delivery and biosensing. However, few studies have investigated the effects of these Nanoparticles on the Immune System. In this study, the in vitro effects of GONPs on the immune system was evaluated by exposing murine (mice) macrophages, RAW 264.7 cells and Human whole blood cell cultures (to GONPs. A number of parameters were monitored for both RAW and whole blood cell cultures, these included Cytotoxicity, inflammatory biomarkers, cytokines of the acquired immune system and a proteome profile analysis. The GONPs were cytotoxic to both RAW and whole blood cell cultures at 500 μg/mL. In the absence of LPS, GONPs elicited an inflammatory response from the murine macrophage, RAW and whole blood cell cultures at 15.6 and 5 μg/mL respectively. This activation was further corroborated by proteome profile analysis of both experimental cultures. GONPs inhibited LPS induced interleukin 6 (IL-6) synthesis and PHA induced interferon gamma (IFNγ) synthesis by whole blood cell cultures in a dose dependent manner. In the absence of mitogens, GONPs stimulated IL-10 synthesis by whole blood cell cultures. The current study shows that GONPs modulate immune system biomarkers and that these may pose a health risk to individuals exposed to this type of nanoparticle.
