Russia warns radioactive waste could hit Germany if accident occurs at damaged nuclear power plant

  • Russia’s Ministry of Defense has warned of a potential accident occurring at the nuclear power plant it is occupying in southern Ukraine.
  • It says the plant’s backup system is damaged and that an accident could cause radioactive material to cover Germany, Poland and Slovakia.
  • The U.N.’s secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are set to discuss the status of the plant Thursday.
