The Pope seems confused: according to his latest comments, Russia is guilty of causing a new Holocaust even though he claimed months ago that NATO is responsible for provoking Putin by moving further East despite promises made by Bush to Gorbachev in 1991 not to do so.
And now that former German Chancellor Merkel has admitted that the Minsk Accords were used as a delaying tactic to arm Ukraine following the US-led Maidan coup of 2014, it is clearer than ever that Russia was indeed provoked despite Western propaganda to the contrary.
Naming former comic Zelensky Time’s Man of the Year may seem funny and woke to some. But this war is no laughing matter. Francis would do well to go beyond the self-serving claims of those who are backing yet another “stupid war” with this one having the potential to blow up the world.
Maybe he is feeling guilty for the role of the Catholic Church in enabling some of Germany’s WW2 atrocities. The Pontiff needs to do some serious fact-checking and get clear that it was the Ukrainians who supported the NAZI’s during the war, killing countless Jews and other deplorables (useless eaters) while Russia was fighting to “liberate” them.
And today, it is the infamous AZOV Brigade along with other far-right groups within Ukraine who espouse the ideology of the German Reich that many observers feel are primarily responsible for the tragic events unfolding there now.
True, Russia has been ruthless in some of its tactics but so have the Ukrainians. This is war, not pro sports, and the stakes are literally life and death.
Francis needs to get clear that there are lots of bad guys here as is often the case with wars. That’s why it would behoove him if he did a LOT more to stop the slaughter by using his high office to promote peace.
Since Christmas is now upon us and both sides claim to believe in the same Prince of Peace, this strikes me as a perfect moment for him to get the warring parties to endorse a Christmas Truce.
I pray negotiations begin soon, a ceasefire is implemented and the killing finally ends!
