“Nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s war on Gaza, according to the official death toll, though the true casualty figure is likely far higher with thousands of the dead unaccounted for. Meanwhile, Israeli forces have raided towns and villages across the occupied West Bank, and settlers under military protection have repeatedly stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in recent days. This all comes as the State Department on Tuesday announced the approval of $20 billion in new arms sales to Israel, including scores of fighter jets. We speak with the Reverend Munther Isaac, pastor at the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem, who joins us (Democracy Now) in our New York studio for an in-depth conversation. “In a remarkable and telling moment of journalism, a BBC radio presenter recently engaged in a live interview with an Israeli spokesperson, David Mence, that has quickly gone viral, leaving a lasting impression on those who have followed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This interview, however, was not just another routine interaction; it marked a significant turning point in how Israeli narratives are being challenged and scrutinized in global media. Mence, who has a history of facing tough interviews, notably from a Norwegian journalist who exposed his false claims about civilian casualty levels in Gaza, once again found himself in the spotlight. Despite his insistence on his Middle Eastern roots, Mence’s crisp British accent and polished demeanor have often been seen as a tool to lend credibility to the narratives he pushes. But this time, his usual tactics of playing the victim and diverting attention from Israel’s controversial actions fell flat. The BBC journalist, well-prepared and unwilling to let dubious claims go unchallenged, pressed Mence on the unverified assertions he made about Israel’s human rights record.
