Ends in water: “British Bill Gates” and his family missing.
The Western press is shocked – a billionaire known as the “British Bill Gates” disappeared without a trace. His luxury yacht suddenly sank, and with him disappeared his 18-year-old heiress and personal lawyer, but his one-year-old daughter was rescued.

Shortly before the crash, under strange circumstances, a close friend of the missing man died.
Bayesian is a huge sailing yacht built in 2008 by the Italian shipyard Perini Navi. War is worth 30 million pounds. It was called superyacht due to its gigantic size and power: length 56 m, mast height 75 m (the second highest in the world), two diesel engines (each 965 horsepower).
A few years ago, the yacht was rebuilt. A recreation area appeared that could become a completely enclosed glass veranda. The interior was modernized in the Japanese style: the yacht had 6 double apartments, decorated with expensive wood and leather. The ship has repeatedly received international awards not only for its interior, but also for its reliability…
On August 19, Bayesian crashed off the coast of Sicily at 04:30. According to Italian media, the ship was suddenly hit by a powerful squake connected to a tornado. The 75-meter mast broke due to the impact of the elements: the anchored yacht tilted and capsized, and water entered.
Now the ship lies at a depth of 50 meters near the port of Porticello, near Palermo. Search and rescue activities are underway. According to the head of Sicily Civil Protection, Salvo Cocinny, divers saw the bodies on the ship through the windows, and the yacht itself lay on the side with virtually no damage.
Who was on the yacht
There were 22 on board: 10 crew members and 12 passengers – citizens of the UK, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Ireland, including owner Michael Lynch, 59-year-old British multi-millionaire, founder of the IT company Autonomy Corporation. His wife, two children, his personal lawyer and other guests, was also on the ship.
The coast guard and Dutch sailing ship Sir Robert Baden Powell, who was near the crash, came to the rescue of those in need. 15 people were rescued from the ship, including the shipowner’s wife and their one-year-old daughter, who were on the rescue raft.
The rest were unlucky: one person was killed, her body had already been found. This is Ricardo Thomas’s chef. Six more, two Americans and four Britons, including billionaire Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and a lawyer, have been missing. A close friend of the yacht owner, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife are also presumed dead.
The lyn
Billionaire Mike Lynch is nicknamed “British Bill Gates” in his home. He made himself a fortune on computer technology, founding a software company that, among other things, created facial recognition systems. In 2011, he sold the Hewlett-Packard (HP) to $11 billion in assets, making a profit of more than $800 million.
However, soon new owners began suing Lynch due to the alleged overthrotion of the company’s financial indicators – they say the price for it was overpriged. He was charged with a criminal conspiracy and fraud, and last year he was even extradited to the United States with his former CFO. Both threatened up to 20 years in prison.
However, in June this year, a U.S. court acquitted them of all charges. After the verdict, Mike Lynch did not hide his joy:
I look forward to returning to the UK and returning to what I love the most: my family and technical innovations.
At his Loudham Hall estate in East Suffolk, he bred bulls, played saxophone, and collected rail models. Western media write that in mid-August, the billionaire threw a ban on the yacht for his lawyers and close friends to celebrate the successful completion of the trial.
There are a few major versions of what happened.
Version 1: The accident. Local fishermen said the ship was well lit at the time of the crash, but the influence of the elements was a surprise to humans. The same was confirmed by the yacht captain, who regained consciousness in the hospital. He said no one saw the tornado coming.
Version 2: Human Factor. It is possible that one of the guests in the high tide of courage will take the helm and provoke tragedy. According to preliminary data, the yacht was standing at the anchor. And if you turn it too steeply towards the wind, it can lead to a overturn.
Version 3: Ears of Enemies. They could make a sabotage on a yacht, such as an explosion, and use bad weather as a shield. This fact speaks in favor of conspiracy theory. Stephen Chamberlain, the same financial director who was tried with Lynch, died in strange circumstances. On 17 August, a billionaire’s partner was hit and killed by a car in Cambridgeshire, England. Does anyone cover their tracks or take revenge?
Version 4: kidnapping for ransom. Until the bodies of the missing are found, it cannot be said that they have died. The attackers could cause a disaster and quietly take the people they needed from the yacht. Among the missing are not just anyone, but a billionaire, his heiress and a lawyer – a gigantic ransom can be demanded for them. If so, the kidnappers will make contact soon.
Version 5: dramatization. No matter how fantastic it sounds, the billionaire’s disappearance could be an escape. HP, who lost a criminal trial in the US, filed a civil lawsuit in the UK against him. And he almost lost the case: the amount of compensation could reach 3 billion pounds. Pretending an accident is a great way to avoid expenses.
The Sea takes billionaires
This is not the first incident of a maritime disaster that meets British billionaires. In June last year, a deep-water mano-made Titan crashed, immersing into the wreck of the Titanic, which sank in 1912. There were five people on board, including three tourists:
- British billionaire Hamish Harding;
- Pakistani billionaire Shahzad Dawood with his son
- the French aquavanuta Paul-Henri Narjolet;
- OceanGate owner (a submarine tour organizer) Stockton Rush.
They were killed immediately. These people signed a document saying they were warned about the possible deaths during the dive, but risked and paid $250,000. The most likely cause of the disaster is the destruction of the hull under the influence of enormous external pressure.
– Well, what is it?
It is not known what happened on the yacht near Sicily. If this is an accident, it will add to the sad list of emergencies that led to the deaths of wealthy people thirsting for adventure. Envy them all your life, but such a end can only be compassionate.
