NC GOP Chairman: Sen. Burr’s Vote Shocking

Seven Republican senators voted President Donald Trump guilty on incitement of insurrection Saturday, including Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., who had voted the whole trial unconstitutional.

The irony is not lost on the North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley.

“North Carolina Republicans sent Sen. Burr to the United States Senate to uphold the Constitution and his vote [Saturday] to convict in a trial that he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” Whatley wrote in a statement provided to Newsmax.

Burr was among 45 Republican senators who had originally voted not to proceed to the Senate impeachment trial on the grounds it was unconstitutional, because the Senate lacked jurisdiction to try a former president who is no longer in office.

Also, Supreme Court Justice John Roberts declined to preside over the trial.

Still, Burr was among 57 senators who voted to convict the former president for incitement of insurrection. Burr has announced this will be his last term in the Senate, which runs out after January 2023.

Lara Trump – the wife of Eric Trump, the former president’s middle son – has been considered a potential Republican Senate candidate in her home state of North Carolina in 2022 midterm elections.
